Community group chat is a relatively new element in WhatsApp that was launched last year. Its purpose is to house multiple sub-groups of larger groups like organizations and schools, and it can hold up to 5,000 users, support video calls for up to 32 participants, and enable group-wide admin announcements.

In a limited alpha test, Meta is introducing the ability to form curated communities on its Horizon Worlds platform. These are known as ‘Members-Only’ Worlds that are limited to 150 members and 25 concurrent visitors.

Within these spaces, users of Horizon Worlds can create groups based on shared interests, such as book clubs, gaming groups, VIP creator supporters, or just hangout spots for friends. In other words, it’s like a Facebook Groups experience but in VR.

Creators of Members-Only worlds will have complete control over these Worlds, including who can access them and what goes on inside them. In Meta’s words, the goal is “to put design in the creators’ hands so that they can fully craft the experience they want to offer others.”

Is the Gaming Community too Toxic?

The toxicity that has developed throughout time in the gaming world was brought to light with ‘Gamergate’ in the year 2014. Several female gamers reported that they has been a target of bullying, sexual harassment and even received death threats from other online users. This dangerous world of anger, prejudice and misogyny became clear for the world to see.

Statistics from Statista’s Global Consumer Survey (GCS) shows that even several years later the toxic behavior in online gaming community hasn’t ended. Data shows that approximately one in five U.S. gamers report that sexism and toxic behavior are issues they have to face till date.

Infographic to the century of Chinese Communist Party

Decades ago on July 23rd, 1921, a group of Chinese revolutionaries formed a Chinese Communist Party in Shanghai. The party was founded secretly after the inspiration from the Russian Bolshevik Revolution. At that time, China was wrecked and deprived of strength as a result of the Civil War. On July 1st, 2021, the country has marked the centenary of its Communist Party.

In 1949, the country faced the backing of the rural population mostly however, the CCP achieved success in routing the nationalist government of Chiang Kai-shek. In the same year, on October 1st, the People’s Republic of China in Beijing was proclaimed by the Chairman of the Communist Party, Mao Zedong.

After gaining power and authority, Mao made his attempts to boost industrial development in the country. But, he had some disastrous policies such as the Great Leap Forward of 1958. It was basically an agricultural collectivization campaign that ultimately resulted in the starving death of nearly 30 million people.

Apart from the rise in usage of Facebook Groups especially due to the pandemic, Groups has always been an effective tool for local communities to engage effectively. The new feature of Neighborhoods is aimed at maximizing social connection within users’ immediate vicinity.

The tool is already available to a number of users, including those in Calgary, Canada. A preview of the Neighborhood tool shows a ‘get started’ prompt to connect with neighbors and discover more about local happenings within the app.

Users would be taken to a step-by-step process to create their Neighborhoods profile. It starts with first confirming location to make sure that a user is in the relevant group. Facebook hosted its yearly event of Communities Summit, which was held online this year and revealed a range of new features that the company has introduced for Groups, and provided insights related to other important aspects of Groups such as usage and engagement.

Regarding usage of Groups, Facebook has observed a noticeable rise in their usage during the coronavirus pandemic. More than 1.8 billion are estimated to have been spending time on Groups each month. Compared to the statistics of last year, a total number of 4 billion additional users are using Groups this year. Moreover, more than 70 billion users have been organizing and managing Groups as admins globally.

Facebook’s original purpose behind Groups was to help bring people closer together, and that is certainly what the feature has been doing as more and more people have started to stay connected via Groups while staying at home.

Facebook has launched a bunch of new tools for Group Admins to help them have better control over Groups and manage them more easily.

One of the main tools is called Admin Assist, which has been designed to allow admins to set up automated rules for post moderation, so they can filter problematic posts more easily. This includes automatically declining posts containing certain keywords or links, or posts that have been made by inactive members of the Group. Basically, it allows admins control over what content is published on the Group and who posts it. Admins can save more time and effort with this feature.

The feature will be available over the coming months according to Facebook, and could be used on desktop only, initially.

The other interesting feature is that of Group Topics. This includes topics that can be ‘'pinned’' within groups along with hashtags. To add a topic, members or admins can simply use a hashtag before a keyword or phrase and admins can then pin topics at the top of the Group, where they can be easily seen. It looks like that with this tool, Facebook is trying to use hashtags as a way of sorting content. Earlier this week, it had also launched a hashtag challenge for Group admins to increase engagement within Groups.

Furthermore, a new Community Management Certification course is also being offered by Facebook, which is aimed at helping admins improve their management skills and would also provide post insights and group activity analytics, so admins can get more context on how to build group engagement.

Facebook’s existing tool of Brand Collabs Manager is also getting a new feature of Group Promotions. The Brand Collabs Manager was designed as a partnership tool by the company to help admins generate revenue from their efforts and allow brands to reach highly engaged audiences based on Group discussion. Now by adding the option of Group Promotions to this tool, brands are being provided new connection opportunities for sponsored content.

Twitter has announced that it is introducing two new teams, the Accessibility Center of Excellence and the Experience Accessibility Team to make its platform more accessible.

The social media company states that it realized after testing Voice Tweets earlier this summer, that it still needs to do more work in terms of making the platform more inclusive for the disabled community. To fulfill the purpose, it has created the two new teams. Both the teams will specifically focus on the features and products on Twitter.

According to Twitter, its Accessibility Center for Excellence team will be responsible to set goals, drive progress, and consult and partner with groups across Twitter's core business functions to help make aspects of the company more accessible, including Twitter's office space, marketing and communication strategies, legal and policy standards, and other areas.

The Experience Accessibility Team, on the other hand will work on both Twitter's new and existing products and features to promote greater accessibility on the service. TikTok announced that it has been working on improving its policies towards hateful content and behavior, with the aim to make the platform hate-free. The company is doing so to ensure safety for the diverse range of users that engage on TikTok, so they can express themselves freely and have a positive experience on the app.

According to TikTok, it is working in five ways to counter hateful content on its platform.

First, the company is evolving its hate speech policy. In its community guidelines, TikTok defines hate speech as ''content that intends to or does attack, threaten, incite violence against, or dehumanize an individual or group of individuals on the basis of protected attributes like race, religion, gender, gender identity, national origin, and more." The company has expanded its policies to counter hate by accounting for scenarios that make users feel excluded and marginalized.

The company is working hard towards removing hateful content and banning accounts that promote it. It is also taking action against race-based harassment and denial of violent tragedies by removing content related to these things. According to TikTok, it has removed over 380,000 videos and 64,000 comments in the U.S. since the beginning of this year that promoted hateful content. It has also banned more than 1,300 accounts that violated the platform's hate speech policy.

TikTok is also working on a strategy to make it harder for people to search for hateful content and accounts, so a more positive and joyful environment can be created on the app. If someone searches for a hateful ideology or group, the company will refrain from showing results or redirect the search to its community guidelines to educate people about its policies against hateful content and behavior.

App-Based Giving For Religious Communities
The purpose of a religious community is to serve the community, and right now it’s very difficult to make that happen. The problem is that religious communities usually meet in person and offerings are given in person, as well. Because religious services aren’t happening in person at the moment because of the COVID-19 pandemic, religious communities are struggling to keep their programs afloat as funds dwindle. Fortunately, there’s a better way to handle religious offerings during social distancing.
