Humans are superb innovators that have used technology to refine all aspects of life, but the thing that truly defines humans is our ability to communicate with each other. It seems that no other species is as social as humans, so it comes as no surprise that some of our most impactful inventions have helped us refine our communications. We can see this in full detail through this timeline created by the team at Ooma.

LinkedIn has launched a new DM engagement feature ‘Pages
Messaging,’ that will allow Company Pages to send and receive DMs. People will
be able to directly get in touch with companies via direct message, and Page
admins will in turn be able to respond as the Page.
Up until now, the direct messaging functionality was only limited
to LinkedIn members to interact with other members. However, seeing the rise in
activity of Company Pages on LinkedIn, the platform decided to extend the DM functionality
to companies, so people could engage with them directly.
Pages Messaging was first spotted last month on LinkedIn, and has since been available to selected users on the platform. The feature has now started to roll out to all users.
Showcased earlier at its latest I/O Event, Google’s new
AI-powered experimental messaging feature “Magic Compose” is now being rolled
out in beta to a limited number of users. The technology has been designed to generate
“stylized, suggested responses with the context of your messages,” according to
Google.
While messages in Magic Compose are secured with end-to-end encryption, Google has mentioned on the Google App’s support page that up to 20 previous messages, including emojis, reactions, and URLs, will be sent to Google’s servers “to make suggestions relevant to your conversation.”
Ever since the launch of Bing Chat, which was not too long
ago, Microsoft has been constantly updating the AI chatbot with new additions. The
company has just launched new Bing features for mobile including the ability to
switch Bing Chats between mobile and desktop, a contextual chat feature for
Edge mobile, a Bing widget for iOS and Android, and more.
First off, the mobile-desktop chat option will enable users to pick up a conversation on their mobile that they left on desktop, and vice versa. For instance, you could ask Bing to create a recipe for you and then have it provide a substitute on your mobile phone when you’re at a grocery store and can’t find the ingredient you are looking for.
YouTube is expanding its latest engagement tools of Comment Translation
and Smart Replies. The new translation tool relies on Google Translation to let
users translate comments in the app, whereas Smart Replies provides response suggestions
to assist users in their interaction with each other in-stream.

YouTube has announced that the Translate button is now available on mobile and offers translation in 100 languages. Although Google Translate does not provide completely accurate translations, its ability is still adequate enough to help people make sense of text displayed in foreign languages.
WhatsApp has released a new engagement feature for group
chats called Communities, which is aimed to create organized conversations between
multiple groups.

WhatsApp users will be able to connect groups under one common and relevant topic, and switch between these groups in the Community. A description and list of subgroups will be displayed in the Community.
The range of emojis used on social media platforms and
messaging continues to grow. Recently, Unicode Consortium approved a bunch of new
emojis, which include hearts in different colors, the WiFi symbol, maracas, a
blue jellyfish, a goose and others. According to a report published by Adobe on
emoji trends, emojis have become an important part of communication and people
have reported that emoji usage helps them with creativity and even team
decision-making at work.
The finding suggests that emoji usage is not just limited to
messaging, but could be incorporated by brands in their marketing as well, to
connect with audiences. “The versatility of emoji allows for endless possibilities
to connect with each other, as their meanings evolve and inclusivity expands,”
Adobe states in its blog post.
Backlash and offensive interactions are common on Twitter
and the platform has continued to develop ways to limit such experiences for
its users. In an attempt to further improve its detection systems in relation
to this issue, Twitter is working on a new tool called Reply Filter.
The Reply Filter option works by preventing a user from
seeing replies containing potential violent language. It is assumed that this element functions
using the same algorithm as the ‘offensive reply warnings,’ that Twitter had
released during the time of the 2020 US elections. The prompts were found to be
effective in reducing negative tweet replies by 30%.
Meta reports that over 20 billion messages are exchanged
over Messenger each month between businesses and customers. This insight
suggests that direct messaging has become a convenient way for brands and
consumers to interact with one another.
To further understand how users in the APAC (Asia-Pacific)
region are relying on messaging for brand queries, and how businesses can serve
customers in a better way using messaging, Meta conducted a research in
collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group, which consisted of surveying more
than 6,500 respondents across the APAC region.
The analysis in the report shows some valuable information on the significance of direct messaging between brands and consumers. Some of the key points mentioned in the report are as follows:
Twitter is currently testing a new video reply option on iOS,
with which users can respond to tweets with a full-screen video or image. The original
tweet will be embedded in the image or video screen.
Twitter has been testing this option since last month at
least, and has created it in a similar way that Fleets worked. This feature is
a little different from Fleets and provides a unique Tweeting experience.
Additionally, an improved text editing option for Tweets is
also being tested, with which you can post tweets in different colors, to give
them more presence.
