Meta is bringing two new features to WhatsApp as part of its Community tab: one that provides better privacy to community group chats, and another that makes it easier to find groups that users have in common.

Community group chat is a relatively new element in WhatsApp that was launched last year. Its purpose is to house multiple sub-groups of larger groups like organizations and schools, and it can hold up to 5,000 users, support video calls for up to 32 participants, and enable group-wide admin announcements.

In a limited alpha test, Meta is introducing the ability to form curated communities on its Horizon Worlds platform. These are known as ‘Members-Only’ Worlds that are limited to 150 members and 25 concurrent visitors.

Within these spaces, users of Horizon Worlds can create groups based on shared interests, such as book clubs, gaming groups, VIP creator supporters, or just hangout spots for friends. In other words, it’s like a Facebook Groups experience but in VR.

Creators of Members-Only worlds will have complete control over these Worlds, including who can access them and what goes on inside them. In Meta’s words, the goal is “to put design in the creators’ hands so that they can fully craft the experience they want to offer others.”

Each creator’s special contribution is determined by a category. There are five categories in total and each represents ten creators. The categories are: Changemakers, Foodies, Icons, Innovators, and Originators.

Creators highlighted in the Discover List will be displayed on brand channels on TikTok, while a special digital booklet is also dedicated to them, containing their description and overview of their work.

From time to time, Meta introduces new features to assist creators on its platforms in maximizing their content reach. As a recent update, the company has announced some new elements dedicated to its creator community, including new endorsement notifications, Rising Creator titles, new templates for Stories, an exclusive post option for subscribers, and a composer selector option.

The Creator Endorsement feature is designed for those who manage a Creator Page, to allow them to recommend another creator’s Page to their followers via direct notification. This is a beneficial tool to bring people’s attention to fellow creators, so they can build their connections.

The Rising Creator feature also serves a similar purpose, as it gives creators a title that makes them stand out as someone with a strong audience engagement and quality content. The title is awarded for one week at a time, is re-evaluated weekly, and displayed on a creator’s Page.

Is the Gaming Community too Toxic?

The toxicity that has developed throughout time in the gaming world was brought to light with ‘Gamergate’ in the year 2014. In the same year, on October 1st, the People’s Republic of China in Beijing was proclaimed by the Chairman of the Communist Party, Mao Zedong.

After gaining power and authority, Mao made his attempts to boost industrial development in the country. But, he had some disastrous policies such as the Great Leap Forward of 1958. It was basically an agricultural collectivization campaign that ultimately resulted in the starving death of nearly 30 million people.

Facebook has launched limited testing of a new option for Groups this week and it is called Neighborhoods. Apart from the rise in usage of Facebook Groups especially due to the pandemic, Groups has always been an effective tool for local communities to engage effectively. The new feature of Neighborhoods is aimed at maximizing social connection within users’ immediate vicinity.

The tool is already available to a number of users, including those in Calgary, Canada. A preview of the Neighborhood tool shows a ‘get started’ prompt to connect with neighbors and discover more about local happenings within the app.

Users would be taken to a step-by-step process to create their Neighborhoods profile. It starts with first confirming location to make sure that a user is in the relevant group. The profile will be separate from the user’s main Facebook profile and will provide the ability to connect with others in the local community.
