Public domain characters timeline showing famous fictional characters expected to become available for creators from 2027 to 2037

For writers, animators, game developers and independent creators, the public domain can open the door to new creative possibilities. When the copyright term for a work expires, certain versions of characters and stories may become available for reuse, adaptation and reinterpretation.

This infographic from PixlParade maps out famous fictional characters that are expected to enter the public domain over the next decade, from 2027 to 2037. The timeline includes well-known names from animation, books, comics and classic films.

Some of the most interesting entries include Pluto and Babar the Elephant in 2027, King Kong in 2029, Donald Duck and Goofy in 2030, and Porky Pig in 2031. The 2030s also bring major literary, film and comic book milestones.

According to the timeline, 2033 is expected to include characters from The Hobbit, such as Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and Gollum, along with Disney’s Snow White film version and Daffy Duck. Superman is expected to follow in 2034, Batman in 2035, and Wonder Woman in 2037.

For indie creators, these dates are exciting because public domain works can inspire new books, films, games, comics and artwork. However, public domain use is not always simple. The specific version of a character matters, and trademark rights may still apply even after copyright protection expires.

For example, a character’s earliest version may become public domain before later designs, story details or branding. That means creators should always check the exact version, publication history and legal limits before using a famous character in a commercial project.

Take a look at the infographic below for a visual guide to the characters expected to enter the public domain between 2027 and 2037.

These Misheard Lyrics Reveal How We Parse Words We Don’t Understand

Many people listening to Sabrina Carpenter’s summer bop, “Espresso,” heard the lyric “I guess so” as “queso”, which happens to mean “cheese in Spanish. As nonsensical as that lyric seems in the song, it reveals why we mishear song lyrics. This universal experience is especially common in songs with fast tempos, distinctive accents, or rarely used words. The team at Preply examined commonly misheard lyrics through the lens of language learning. They believe that the features that confuse listeners in songs are the same qualities language learners should be exposed to. They think listening to music is great language practice. Listening actively to a song while verifying the lyrics can reveal surprising mistakes, even for native speakers. Look through the team’s results to see which lyrics might have tripped you up. Elton John has the most misheard lyric of all time, while Lady Gaga is the most misheard artist. You’ll find plenty of funny and eye-opening mistakes on the team’s lists.

The Most Villainous Disney Characters

Maleficent, the self-proclaimed “Mistress of All Evil,” only ranked 10th on this PixlParade list ranking Disney villains by level of villainy. While some of the rankings might surprise you, the team took a scientific approach to rating evil and quantified the type and amount of evil each villain committed. Looked at in this way, it’s hard to argue that Frollo of The Hunchback of Notre Dame isn’t the evilest villain. He gets points for mass murder, mass domination, war crimes, torture, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Of course, levels of evil will always have an element of opinion and reaction. Cruella de Vil ranking 35th feels low for someone who wants to kill puppies and steal their fur. Hades is a fan-favorite and made it to #12. Is he more evil or charismatic? Captain Hook at #30 might feel wrong since he’s the original Disney pirate. Who got robbed and who’s overrated? Explore the chart and decide for yourself.

Getting into the gaming business is a strategy digital content platforms tend to adopt for two reasons: one, as a way of keeping old users engaged with the platform and attracting new users; and two, for increasing revenue. LinkedIn has recently become one of these platforms too, with the launch of its own puzzle games.

The games are: ‘Pinpoint,’ ‘Crossclimb,’ and ‘Queens,’ and they are all available on LinkedIn on desktop as well as mobile. Each of these games can be played once in a day. They also show metrics like high score, daily streak, leaderboards, and people you know that have played them.
