For the past couple of years, Microsoft has been considering launching an Xbox mobile gaming store, and the company’s plans are finally turning into reality. Microsoft first hinted at a “next-generation store” back in 2022. It was now revealed at the Bloomberg Technology Summit today that the Xbox mobile gaming store is set to be launched in July of this year.

Microsoft’s main intent behind creating the Xbox mobile store was to provide a combined gaming and store experience that is independent of a single ecosystem. The company argues that no other gaming platform and store experience has yet been able to achieve that.

Speaking about the launch, Xbox president Sarah Bond mentioned that Microsoft is going to begin by bringing its own first-party portfolio to the Xbox mobile store. To offer a more accessible experience beyond the policies of “closed ecosystem stores”, Bond added, the company will begin by offering the experience on web.

The Delta game emulator is the first game emulator that is available for free on the App Store for the first time. It'll enable iOS users to enjoy the gaming experience on their iPhones almost like a pseudo Nintendo DS or GBA.

The app can be accessed on the App Store in several countries outside the EU, and in the EU, it is making debut with the newly launched third-party AltStore PAL app marketplace. According to Riley Testut, developer of the Delta emulator, both the app versions work the same. Other Nintendo emulators, including a wide range from the original Nintendo Entertainment System and Nintendo 64, are also expected to arrive to the App Store.

On-screen buttons in the app change their layout and appearance to match the emulated system. Users can also put up extra buttons for different functions such as quick save states and fast-forward, as well as customize their layout.

The Delta app supports Bluetooth controllers like Xbox One Series S or PS5 controllers; and multiplayer for the NES, SNES, N64, and AirPlay streaming too. It also works with some of Nintendo’s non-typical input methods, like the gyroscope and microphone controls.

Delta offers some additional touches as well, like automatic grabbing of the box art for the games and the ability to customize the art using its built-in database or even custom images. Users can also import controller skins and customize them.

Delta was first released as a 1.0 version in 2019, which means that it has been updated and improved multiple times through the years. This will likely make the app one of the most enhanced emulation experiences on the iPhone.

Video game company Panic has announced that it is reducing the wait time for orders for its little Playdate handheld. After having shipped over 70,000 of the gaming gadgets, Panic reports that the Playdate stock is currently in “limited number” for purchase on its website.

Even when Playdate runs out of stock, customers will be notified that their order wouldn’t ship until a new batch of the gadget is ready to ship. However, the wait time for preorders will still be significantly shorter as compared to before, as Panic delivers its latest preorder batch of Playdate within a few days or weeks.

Roblox has developed its own AI model for swift translation of text in chats, so users can understand each other beyond the language barrier. The technology can translate the messages exchanged between users in 16 languages, including English, French, Japanese, Thai, Polish, and Vietnamese.

The model is built on Roblox’s own large language model (LLM) that it has trained on internal, publicly available data. Instead of creating an LLM for each language, Roblox integrated the LLM within a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture, that ran multiple translation apps, each of which was an expert in one language.

Roblox’s AI translator automatically translates messages as they come in, and users can also see the original text by clicking on an icon. You can also provide feedback to the translator if you find its translations to not be very accurate.

Gaming and streaming services like Xbox Cloud Streaming and GeForce Now, that were previously only available on iOS web, can now be accessed as apps on iOS devices. This is because Apple is allowing developers to submit apps that contain all the games offered in their catalogue in one place on the App Store.

Although earlier in 2020, Apple had opened the gates for these cloud gaming services in the App Store, it required all games offered via each service to be submitted and reviewed as standalone apps. The proposal couldn’t turn into a reality and therefore the present change is a significant one.

Players will also have the option to select a specific screen resolution from a variety of resolutions, that best suits their gameplay needs. Pressing the Shift and Tab keys together in any game will display a menu of all supported resolutions.

YouTube is taking gaming content on its platform to another level by designing a whole dedicated section where users can actually play games directly. The feature, which is currently being tested with users, is called ‘Playables,’ available on YouTube on both desktop and mobile versions. The section is currently available to a select number of users, displayed on their home feed alongside other content.

The development of this feature was first reported back in June, although there isn’t much information revealed about the games included in it. One of the rumoured titles is called Stack Bounce, which has a simple gameplay. There will, however, likely be relatively complex games too, the probability of which is indicated by the option to save gaming progress.

Microsoft's Growth Hindered by Strong U.S. Dollar & PC Market

The release of financial statements of Microsoft for the quarter ending December 2022 presented investors and observers with a mixed bag. Even though the revenue was recorded to be an all-time high of $52.7 billion, the operating income of this tech company dropped by more than $1 billion compared to the previous three-month period. This can be attributed to a considerable cooling of the PC market, which hit OEM bundling business of Microsoft and resulted in a continued decline of revenue in the Windows segment. The company's saving grace: An increased focus on cloud solutions and Artificial Intelligence, welcomed by CEO Natya Sadella as the "next major wave of computing" in the accompanying earnings call.

As part of its latest technological advancement, Meta has announced a new AI model that is part of the strategy game Diplomacy. The AI, named CICERO, is capable of using strategic reasoning and implementing it to negotiate and cooperate with people and form alliances, and is the first AI with these capabilities, as per Meta.

“Diplomacy has been viewed as a nearly impossible challenge in AI because it requires players to understand people’s motivations and perspectives, make complex plans and adjust strategies, and use language to convince people to form alliances,” explains Meta. This suggests that Meta has been successful in overcoming the challenge relatively faster than people would’ve imagined.
