Google is expanding its existing partnership with Reddit to acquire AI training data from the company that will help it adopt better ways to train AI models.

More specifically, as a result of the partnership, Google will be able to access Reddit’s data API that will bring its users real-time content from Reddit’s platform. This will facilitate users of Google’s products in participating in Reddit communities and conversations. In turn, Reddit will have access to Google’s AI-powered service ‘Vertex AI,’ which will help the company enhance its search capabilities.

Reddit has announced two new options for advertisers to improve performance of their ad campaigns on the platform. These include Contextual Keyword Targeting and Product Ads.

According to Reddit, there are two ways that advertisers can benefit from Contextual Keyword Targeting. One, they can” select specific keywords to associate with their brand.” And two, they can “align keywords with their creative ad copy for added relevance.”

Until now, advertisers on Reddit were able to rely on targeting options of specific communities, interests, and locations. Adding relevant keywords in campaigns would add more relevance and precision to the campaigns in terms of reach. This could significantly benefit many brands.

To improve algorithm matching and spam detection, Reddit is acquiring Spell, a machine learning platform that enables teams to run machine learning experiments at scale.

“With Spell’s technology and expertise, we’ll be able to move faster to integrate ML across our Product, Safety, and Ads teams,” states Reddit.

Spell becoming a part of Reddit means that Reddit would improve its processes of identifying and classifying contextual relevance, organizing conversations, customizing ad placements, and protecting communities. For users, this means that they would start seeing more relevant content on the platform, which would ultimately also boost engagement across Reddit, thus making its performance stand out among other social platforms.

Reddit has added a new tab of ‘Discovery’ in its app, as an extension of the Communities tab. The new tab will serve as a navigational tool, providing users with customized subreddit recommendations based on usage.

The Discovery tab is more visually focused, where each community is represented with an image, hence making it easier for users to join the sub-groups highlighted in the tab relative to their usage.

About the functionality of the Discovery tab, Reddit says, ‘’’What we show is based on communities Redditors are already a part of as well as time spent. For example, if a Redditor subscribes to and spends a significant amount of time in football and baseball subs, Discover Tab will prompt them with other sports-related content.”

The feature is currently in the testing phase, and according to data collected by Reddit, it found at least one in five users who joined at least one new community after using the Discover Tab. This indicates that the addition of this tool will be likely successful in terms of boosting engagement.

When Reddit Took Over the Stock Market

During the pandemic, the market crashed and social media users naturally found an investment/finance community online as the world went into lockdown.

One of these communities can be found on Reddit. These Redditors began to notice that big time investors were shorting GameStop stock, meaning they were selling shares they didn’t own and waiting for the stock price to drop so that they could then buy back the shares at a lower price and gain a profit before giving shares back to their rightful owner. A little shady, sure, but not illegal, nor uncommon.

Reddit just acquired video-creating platform Dubsmash, whose tools will be integrated into Reddit as Reddit’s own video-editing tools are limited. Dubsmash will, however, continue functioning as an individual platform as well.

Dubsmash is known to be the popular video app TikTok’s rival app, and its share of US’ short-form video market ranks second after TikTok. Moreover, videos on the platform are reported to be viewed over a billion times per month and the platform’s daily active users make up 30% of its total user population. On the other hand, Reddit has 52 million daily active users on its platform.

Just a few days ago, Reddit launched a new post option which will allow selected subreddit users to add up to 20 images or GIFs to their posts. In the new post format, you will find a counter on the top right of the main visual that you can scroll towards the side to see the other images in the collection.

According to Reddit, this feature was added as a request from the Style, DIY, and Food communities on the platform, in order to have a better way to display their ideas and techniques. With the multiple pictures/GIFs option, the communities can show step-by-step instructions in a single post, clarify captions, and share recipes and tutorials in a better way. Users can also include URLs and captions for each image/GIF in the post.

How Tech companies are invading your privacy?

When the California Consumer Privacy Act was passed in 2018 it gave users the right to have more control over how their personal data is used by tech companies. It gave them the option to not let their personal data be sold, a law that went into effect at the beginning of 2020 spurring many of these companies to do a complete platform overhaul to stay compliant with the new law. But what information are they protecting exactly, how much do these companies actually know about their users? The short answer is a lot.

What exactly do these companies know about us?

Tech companies basically have our email addresses, username, search histories, the device and its model that you are using, all the information on the device you are using, your shopping history, and a lot more. Also, these companies are able to get your facial recognition data. Amazon, TikTok, Facebook, and Microsoft are among many companies that collect their users’ facial recognition data.
