Social media has a dramatic influence on many young people and poses unique challenges for parents and this is especially true during the COVID-19 pandemic. 


Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago recently polled nearly 3,000 current or recent parents of teenagers to better understand their most pressing concerns and challenges with social media, as well as trends in behavior exhibited by their children. The goal was also to cover both the positive and negative aspects of social media which can vary depending on how the technology is used. Overall, the study found that parents are concerns that social media has a negative impact on their children’s lives with 58% of surveyed parents reporting that social media has a negative impact on their children’s lives. How does social media affect your teen? 


Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago split social media use into two very specific categories. The first category looked at the things that social media use takes away from our children and the different things that social media exposes children too. 


Listed below are the top concerns parents have with their teen’s social media use: 


1. Not sleeping enough (58%) 

2. Not enough physical activity (57%) 

3. Not enough focus on schoolwork (52%) 

4. An unhealthy need for approval or attention (51%) 

5. Not enough face-to-face interaction (49%) 

6. Becoming sexualized too soon (45%) 

7. Not enough personal privacy; oversharing their lives (44%) 

8. Potential exposure to sexual predators (41%) 

9. Exposed to hate speech (41%) 

10. Inhibits the ability to focus (37%) 

11. Being bullied (35%) 

12. Inhibits healthy brain development (29%)

Instagram just launched its much-awaited feature, Reels, that the company had earlier announced would be its TikTok competitor. The feature has been designed to create and discover short, fun videos on the Instagram app. 

With Reels, users can record 15 seconds long clips and edit them with audio, effects, and other creative tools. Users can share reels with their followers on their feed and also make them seen on Explore to reach a wider audience in case of owning a public account. In case of having a private account, people will not be able to share a user's reel with non-followers. 


Reels will be found at the bottom of the camera on the Instagram app. On the left side, a variety of tools for editing will be displayed. Reels can be recorded in a series of clips, all at once, or using video uploads form the gallery. Pressing and holding the capture button will get the recording started. A progress indicator at the top of the screen will also be shown while recording.

Instagram announced that it will be launching its new video feature, Reels, in America. The feature is meant to help users create short-form, creative content. Speaking of this, Reels has already been tested in countries like India, France, Germany, and Brazil. According to the NBC News, the feature will arrive in more than 50 countries including America, within a few weeks. Reels’ US launch was further confirmed by a Facebook spokesperson who added that the feature will arrive in America in early August.

Instagram has started rolling out the new shop feature on the app in attempts to make it a more prominent shopping destination. The testing of this feature was started earlier this month and now is being launched by the name of Instagram Shop. Facebook Pay will also be a prominent part of this new feature.

The plans for Instagram Shop were announced last year and confirmed earlier this year. It is being described as a place where you can browse products from different brands and influencers on the platform can also sell their merchandise on it. The account handle for Instagram Shop will be @shop and you can access the Shop tab through Explore tab. The Shop tab will have products sorted in categories for the users to easily navigate.
