The Christmas traditions checklist

Despite celebrating on the same day (December 25), each American family has its own unique tradition that they follow at Christmas. Whether it’s some specific food, carol singing at night, leaving a plate of cookies for Santa, or attending the annual Christmas Mass – the customs vary according to the ethnicity, culture, and values.

But of course, there are some Christmas traditions that are a staple part of every family. This primarily includes picking and decorating a tree, giving presents, and hanging stockings.

Statista also took a Holiday Survey, where they asked more than 1,000 adults regarding the essentials of this holiday. As predicted, 64% of Americans think the ‘tree’ is the most important part of Christmas while watching holiday movies tops the list of 56% respondents.

Battle of pine and plastic – Christmas tree preference by the US families
The time before Christmas is synonymous with shopping – and not only for presents. During the early and mid-December, a majority of American families go on a tree shopping outing to find the perfect tree for their Christmas gifts. Once the tree is found, it is lugged home and decorated to its finest glory.

But did you know that many families are gradually starting to experiment with plastic trees too? Fake Christmas trees provide convenience – and one can simply pack up the tree after Christmas is over to reuse the next year.

The price of tree is another factor that many shoppers consider. According to National Christmas Tree Association of America, the price of a real tree went up to $78 in 2017 while plastic trees can easily be purchased for around $105.

Sales of replica Christmas trees is also increasing gradually and reached more than 23 million in 2018. During the same year, 32.8 million real trees were sold in America – the highest total since 2013.

However, despite the sales, farmers claim to plant fewer numbers of trees during the recession and thus supply of real trees can be limited this year.

So does this mean, more US families will opt for plastic trees for Christmas 2019 or follow the traditional protocol of pine?

The great holiday debate: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?

Just like every year, the movie watchers are again discussing whether to take the popular Bruce Wills flick ‘Die Hard’ as a holiday movie or not?

Released in 1988, the movie has all the ingredients for a Christmas movie - it takes place during a holiday office party, on Christmas Eve to be exact, has carols playing in the background, and ends with scenes in the snow. However, the opposing party claims that Die Hard is an action film, released during the summers. Additionally, the plot of the movie revolves around an extremist who recently migrated from a West Germany political terrorist group and is nowhere associated with Santa Claus.

After witnessing several fierce conversations, YouGov finally decided to end the debate by asking 4,340 Americans about their views of the movie.

The result was as predicted – 20% of the respondents said that Die Hard is a Christmassy film while the majority said that Christmas and Die Hard are not interconnected.
