Zoom has been expanding its niche beyond video chat, with additions such as email and calendar services and even AI-powered tools. The most recent feature that Zoom has introduced on its platform is ‘Notes,’ that will let users can create, share, and edit text documents during video calls.

The Notes option will appear just next to an ongoing video call where you would typically find the chat box, while existing notes can be accessed from the in-meeting navigation bar. During a meeting, members can work on their text documents without having to switch to another screen and relying on third-party tools, hence making it easy to stay present during their meeting.

Zoom is bringing a new addition to its platform that is going to make video calls feel or look like office meetings with a new virtual background feature for the videos. The feature is called Immersive View and it was announced last year at Zoom’s Zoomtopia conference. The company has now launched it for Free and Pro accounts attending meetings and webinars with up to 25 participants.

While Zoom already has a bunch of virtual background features, this one will give a more realistic appearance to participants in the video call, making them feel like they are actually present at a workplace location.

Immersive View can be turned on by the meeting host from the menu, where other options like Speaker View and Gallery View are displayed. By enabling the option, attendees of the meeting will be automatically placed in a variety of built-in virtual scenes like a board room or auditorium. The meeting host can also manually place the attendees in the scenes.

Microsoft Teams now allow you to change video background

Microsoft Teams, just like its competitor communication service Zoom, now allows the users to change the video backgrounds. Firstly, Zoom, which is still the most popular video conference calling application, introduced the feature of changing video backgrounds. With the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, everything has shifted to digital media, including work, education, and connecting with your loved ones. For formal meetings of work and education, it is very important to look neat and tidy with an organized background.

Well, sometimes you do not get enough time to clean up the background, and that is where this new feature of changeable video backgrounds come in. Let's see how you can do it:

  • In order to use the feature, you must start a Teams meeting.
  • Once your video toggles in the bottom of the screen, click on the "background settings".
  • You can now see a list of different backgrounds that you can use in your video. Moreover, you can simply blur out the background as well if you don't feel like adding a false background.
  • The feature also allows the users to add their image, for which you need to click on the "Add new" option at the top of the column.
  • Once you have changed your video's background, it will stay the same throughout the meeting unless you disable or change it again yourself.

Zoom saw a rise in its stock price of more than 500% due to the corona virus pandemic that compelled people around the world to maintain social distancing, and therefore connect with each other virtually through video conferencing, whether for work or socializing.

According to latest reports, Zoom is now considering expanding its platform beyond its video-conferencing service, to include features like email and calendar. It has also been reported that the company is already working on its email service and may start its testing next year. It is unclear whether Zoom has started working on its calendar service, though.

If there is one thing that Zoom users may have struggled with, it is ending a Zoom meeting because many people find it uncomfortable ending a meeting as they say their goodbyes and take the time to find the mouse cursor on their screen and move it over the end call button to end the meeting while the people in the meeting can still see them.

Now it looks like someone has figured a simpler way to end Zoom meetings. Brian Moore, a creative director at Anomaly has come up with an innovative way of instantly leaving a Zoom meeting using a physical lamp cord that can be pulled to end the meeting.

Zoom announced that it is removing the 40-minute time limit for its free accounts on all meetings around the world for the holiday season.

This means that all holidays, in addition to Christmas, that fall in late December or early January will be covered by this special offer by Zoom. "Whether coming together on the final day of Hanukkah, celebrating Christmas, ringing in the New Year, or marking the last days of Kwanzaa, those connecting with friends and family won't get cut short," said Zoom.

Google has announced that it is rolling out an early preview of Zoom support for the Nest Hub Max smart display. The company is making the preview available to users in Canada, US, Australia and UK for now.

In addition to that, users of the Google or Nest Wi-Fi system would notice improvements in the quality of video calls as the devices have been updated to automatically detect or prioritize video call traffic for Google Meet and Zoom.

The update was necessary especially in this time because more and more people will be using the video call functionality during the holiday season to connect with friends and family. Moreover, Zoom has been quite a helpful video-conferencing tool for people to virtually engage with one another this year especially, amidst the pandemic that has compelled people to maintain social distancing.

Joe Biden, Zoom and other high-traffic Google searches in 2020

As the year is coming to an end, Google has revealed the top searches made in 2020 so far. Among the top searches, 'coronavirus' and 'zoom' are of no surprise, as many would expect. Among Us and Zoom have also been the most downloaded apps of 2020, as previously announced by Apple. All these searches and more have been driving a lot of traffic on the Internet.

A lot of the searches have been very depressing too, such as 'Australia wildfires', and 'unemployment', which has been a major issue in 2020 due to the global pandemic. Among the top searches was also 'murder hornet', which made up quite a different search in contrast to others.

Apple just revealed a list of the top most popular downloaded apps on its hardware this year and the results aren't as shocking as 2020 has been a year that had people finding new ways to connect while staying at home. There are two apps in the list that particularly stand out: the video chat platform Zoom and the social game Among Us.

Among Us was launched only in 2018 and managed to become the biggest game of 2020. Especially because its mobile version is free to download, the game saw a high level of usage.

Zoom also had more and more people turning to it for face-to-face video conferencing during the pandemic, whether for the purpose of socializing or business.

Other game apps in the list include Roblox, and Minecraft which remains to be the best-selling game to this day. Social apps like TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, and others also made it to the list, of course.
