Microsoft has revamped the web version of its app store for Windows, which includes new UI and an improved, easier process of app discovery.

The previous version of the web version of the Microsoft Store was formed on Microsoft’s old React codebase built on an “obsoleted UI framework,” according to Microsoft engineer Judah Gabriel. The current version, on the other hand, has replaced React codebase with Shoelace, Lit, Vite, and a C# ASPNET backend. These have accounted for a more efficient interface, easier ways to discover apps, and modern web tech stack.

Microsoft has released a preview of its new collaborative hub ‘Loop’ that makes it possible to manage all the Office apps from one place. It can be used to initiate and organize various tasks, projects, and documents, and even share them in the form of editable blocks in other Microsoft platforms like Teams, Outlook, Word (web version), and Whiteboard.

Loop allows up to 50 people to edit a document at once. Its project and task management features are quite handy, such as progress trackers, custom labels, syncing tools, the option to link up suggested files or tag co-workers or friends, and more.

In addition to that, Microsoft will be bringing its 365 Copilot system to Loop, that uses AI to generate ideas and suggestions. In Loop, the chatbot will also support multiplayer mode, enabling multiple people to ask questions to it.

WhatsApp adds Sticker Store to its web interface

Stickers are a great way to express yourself in a conversation. These can be used for expressing emotions, cheering up the mood, or keeping the chat full of fun. Users can share stickers from a wide range available in the mobile app and even download new ones from the Sticker Store within the app and that too, for free.

When it comes to the web interface, the tech giant is seen to not keep it updated for quite a while. Uses have now become used-to of the same interface on the web with now frequent updates. Luckily, the company finally managed to take some time out and took at least one thing about the web interface into consideration i.e., availability of new Stickers.

Duplex is Google’s technology for handling tasks on a user’s behalf, such as making appointments with a human-like voice. The technology is now being spotted by some users on Google Assistant for Web in the form of Fast Checkout during online shopping.

Duplex for web was first introduced by Google in late 2019 to buy movie tickets on behalf of users. You could select a movie, number of tickets, and seat directly in Google Assistant. The technology was further expanded this year to helping place orders for food, by automatically filling out payment details, and also to change stolen passwords in Chrome.

In October of 2020, Google ran a pilot test of Duplex to help with faster checkouts. There are some registered websites where Duplex seems to be available now; Hot Topic is one, for instance.

Microsoft has collaborated with Google to bring the option of uninstalling Google’s desktop apps from MS Windows. Microsoft engineers have worked to bring this change in Chrome in Windows, so that it would work like a native app.

Reports suggest that Windows 10 users may be provided with the option to uninstall Progressive Web Applications (PWAs) that are basically a Java Script framework that works like a native app but is different from traditional native apps, as they are not entirely combined with the OS and therefore, can not be uninstalled.

With Google’s new tool, the PWAs would be able to be uninstalled like native apps on a desktop, either through the Control Panel or Settings.

Web domain registrar GoDaddy just pulled an uncool prank on its employees by sending them an email phishing test that promised them a $650 holiday bonus. Employees who clicked the link in the email reported receiving another email 2 days later, where instead of receiving the promised holiday bonus, they were asked to take a training course on social engineering.

One of Microsoft’s Teams video calling feature is being introduced to Skype: the Together Mode. This advanced feature uses Artificial Intelligence to cut out a person’s face and shoulders and place them together with other people in a virtual space, making it look like everyone is sitting around each other. In order to access the feature, at least 5 people with webcams would be needed.

The Together Mode will work through Skype’s web version, without the need for an account. Users would simply need to create a Meet Now meeting and share its link with others to join.

Microsoft launched this Teams feature back in July and it was even used by the NBA to bring basketball fans courtside in a virtual experience during live games.

Google has released a new feature for its messaging apps for web, with which users can react to messages in both private and group chats. The reaction can be chosen from 7 emojis, including the thumbs up, thumbs down, angry face, sad, wow/surprised, laugh out loud with tears, and heart eyes emojis.

The feature was already available to Android users on web messaging apps, and is now rolling out for the Google messaging apps.

Replying to messages using a reaction in the form of an emoji is a fun and quick way of expressing yourself to someone in response to a message. One limitation of this feature is that you can not reply to one message with two reactions, as the second reaction will replace the first one.

Google is bringing performance improvements to its last 2020 update of Chrome, Chrome 87. Tab throttling, improved resource management, and several user-facing additions will be part of the final update.

According to Google, version 87 of Chrome will represent the ‘'largest gain in Chrome performance in years.” It features a 5x reduction in CPU usage by prioritizing active tabs over background content, resulting in 1.25 hours increase in battery life.

This performance improvement is a product of the throttling of JavaScript Timer wake-ups in background tabs to once per minute. Tab throttling will roll out limitedly in Chrome 87, while a wider release is expected to happen with Chrome 88 next year.

Another performance improvement feature of Chrome 87 is that it starts up 25% faster than before and load pages up to 7% faster. This improvement is a result of the browser being aware of what tabs are visible to users and optimizing resources for those ones over hidden pages.

Chrome is also now providing users a ‘search for tab’ option, with which they can see a list of what’s open across all windows and then search for different tabs. The option will work for Chrome OS initially and later for other desktop platforms.

Moreover, the Chrome Omnibox will now surface Chrome Actions or shortcuts to common settings, such as clear browsing data, delete history, or edit passwords.

The New Tab Page will soon start surfacing recently-visited and related content cards, according to Google, to help users pick up where they left off while browsing the web. The option will provide its functionality in areas like cooking and shopping initially and will expand to entertainment related content next year.
