Opioid Epidemic Facts And Numbers

You might have heard about the opioid epidemic in America. But you may not know much about its origin, scale, and efforts that are being made to combat it.

It began in the 1990s with prescription opioids hitting the market and the consequent rise in fatal overdoses growing since at least 1999. Currently, the situation varies in different states, as you can see in the infographic.

Even if you are taking opioid pain relievers under a doctor’s supervision, you can become dependent. AddictionResource authors warn people against changing the dose without consulting their doctor first, taking it more frequently, and using the medication for a longer period of time. And it goes without saying that street-obtained drugs are very dangerous.

Confronting the epidemic is going to take more than disrupting supply chains. The U.S. Government is making intensive efforts to battle the crisis, focusing on prevention, harm reduction, enforcement, and addiction treatment.

28 Reasons Why Play Benefits Emotional Health and Development

2020 has certainly been a difficult and trying time for many. Families with young children have had to navigate further difficulties around childcare, working from home and homeschooling. Through it all it is so important to remember to take time to let your children play. Playing with others may not be an option right now but playing within their home, with their imagination, and with parents is imperative in a child's development.

This graph below displays 28 quotes that represent the benefits of play. For example, Dr. Craigan Usher says “The longer children can enjoy play without the kind of monitoring that leads to self-criticism and self-doubt, the better.” Dr. Stuart Brown says “Play is how we are made, how we develop and adjust to change. It allows us to express our joy and connect most deeply with the best in ourselves and others.”  The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability states, “Expressing feelings through play will allow a child to work through his or her problems, rather than internalizing them. In doing this, the child will be forming a basis for healthy emotional, mental, social, and physical well-being by learning how to manage his or her emotions in a socially acceptable way.”

Where art and science are thought to be at crossroads with each other, the opposite is true. The close relationship and link between art and science exist and science itself has proven it. Our mental health depends upon our surrounding. The better the environment is to our senses, the greater and more positive the impact on our mental health.

Ask yourself a simple question right now – Would you like to be in a room that is blank and dull or a room in which there is at least a colour? Your answer would be the second one unless you're feeling low. But here's the thing: Our brains react to art more when they're feeling low.
