An infographic to the Biomass of Earth

There are millions of different species living on the planet Earth i.e., around 8.7 million out of which, more than a quarter of them live in water. With such an enormous number of species, it is truly hard to comprehend each and every type of it. Still, the infographic below visualizes almost all of the biomass of life on the planet Earth.

The majority of the biomass is made up of plants i.e., 82.4 percent and rightfully so, there are 320,000 species available. Moreover, the excellent photosynthetic process keeps the entire ecosystem going and growing.

Followed by bacteria and fungi with 12.8 and 2.2 percent of the total biomass. Currently, 148,000 species of fungi have been discovered however, scientists believe that there are possibly millions more unidentified fungal species.

Green buildings: An approach to reduce global warming

The world is getting worst and worst in terms of global warming, every other day the number of pollutants are rising. Things that are being overlooked now can bring a lot of consequences for the entire planet. Many people may not know that the construction of buildings also contributes to global warming. Wondering how? Well, in 2019, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that the buildings and their construction together accounted for 35 percent of the total energy use whereas, 38 percent of the energy and other processes related to carbon dioxide emission.

In order to reduce this number, the building developers and construction firms are looking for ways to construct buildings in smarter and greener ways. This will not only save the cost but also cause no harm to the environment.

Countries' share in Earth's land

Earth, in its most natural form, has given magnificent surprises to mankind in the form of towering mountains and vast lengths of oceans. It is truly desirable how little pieces of Earth are either covered with water, land, or humongous mountains. Since 30% of Earth comprises land, less than half of it has countries situated over it, and the other 70% is covered with ocean water. As per the data put together by United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), a total of 200 countries currently exist on the land of the Earth, each consuming a certain percentage of land.

This infographic talks about the share of Earth land taken by each of these countries. According to the surface area, Russia, Canada, China, and Antarctica top the list with the percentage of 3.35%, 1.96%, 1.88%, and 2.745%, respectively. It is important to note that Antarctica is not a country but a continent with the most percentage share of Earth land. Next on the list are countries U.S., Brazil, and Australia, with the share percentage of 1.876%, 1.670%, and 1.508%. The rest of the countries have a share percentage less than 1% in the infographic below.

Greta Thunberg’s protests against Climate Change

A Swedish environmental activist, Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg, is recognized worldwide due to her protests against climate change. She was as young as 15 years old since she started to miss her school for protests. The little girl very soon realized that adult and mature teachers who teach them stuff in school do not follow it themselves. That was the day when she decided that she needs to make her teachers walk their talk.

Greta’s story is extremely inspiring in various ways; she was born in 2003 in Sweden and was just 8 years old when she got to learn about climate change. She was so worried why no one is doing anything for this disastrous change coming our way. In 2018, Sweden was hit by record-breaking weather, heatwaves, wildfires, and a lot more, to which Greta decided to raise her voice. The girl missed her school and protested in front of the Swedish Parliament. She believed that she had to do it because adults were only putting her future at stake.

How particles of various sizes have the power to make a huge impact

Did you know that coronavirus still stands at the third position in terms of size? Today we will talk about the different particles and their sizes and how. Over the years, scientists and researchers have been able to deduce many distinct theories about each of these particles and how some of them have the capability to pose extensive damage to the world. Whether it is the Zika virus with the size of 45nm or a Dust particle comprising the size of 2.5µm, the effects are always far greater and deadlier than estimated. For instance, a human body is prone to any particle that has a size lesser than 10 microns which, in this case, could be salt, pollen, spectrum, fine beach sand, etc. Similarly, dust particles, bacterium, coronavirus, T4 Bacteriophage, and Zika virus are widely known to be the particles that could easily find a way into your body and corrupt in a matter of days.

Where and What are the Hottest Temperatures Recorded in the United States?

It's getting hotter all across the globe, and the United States is no exception to this change brought by global warming. One example os that of s desert region located where the border of Nevada and California lies. Since this Death Valley is a desert, it is already hot. But recently, the temperature in the death valley region shot to an overwhelming 130 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale.

Although that temperature hasn't broken the all-time record of the highest temperature ever recorded in the USA, it very much reminds us of it. Back in 1913, Death Valley had experienced a scorching 134 degrees. Moreover, the desert regions in the Southern West of the USA has experienced four of the five hottest days ever recorded.

The Amount of Ice Earth Has Lost in 23 Years

The topic of climate change needs no introduction, as the issue keeps getting worse day by day. But all these changes have been piling up especially since 1994. They have only recently begun to speed up, and we can witness that by how hot the climate around the world has started to become.

According to research by the University of London, as well as universities at Leeds and Edinburgh, our planet has lost 28 trillion tonnes of ice from 1994 till 2017. That amount would be equivalent to the entire region of the UK, and that too in-depth. And of course, the cause can be summed up using one term, that is, global warming.

The Role of EREF in Solid Waste Management Research and Awareness

Solid waste management has been around as an issue since the beginning of the 90s, and of course, even before that. Although now it has surpassed even more in terms of mass, even back then it had created an air of consideration amongst environmentalists. Like in any other field, science was being looked at to come to the rescue for sorting out issues related to solid waste management. And thus with the help of data available at that time, the research began.

The organisation that came into being is known as the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF), and it just celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2019. The 25 years for the entity has been full of educational and research projects. The organisation has also played its part in using its valuable research findings to create policies regarding the improvement of waste management.

Earth Day is an annual reminder that our homeland is hurting and we need to save it. This year marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and it was the best time to talk about climate change, global warming and ongoing global pandemic.

Earth Day was founded by Gaylord Nelson in 1970 with an objective of a national day to focus on the environment. Nelson directed the energy and motivation of the student anti-war movement to spread awareness about emerging issues like water and air pollution. It was a massive success as many people loved the idea and were woken about the state of our planet.

On Sunday, a major astronomical event happened as an asteroid about as big as the size of a car flew within about 1,830 miles (2,950 kilometers) of the Earth.

near earth asteroid 2020 qg path closest approach iau mpc near

The distance was the closest ever recorded, according to asteroid trackers and the Sormano Astronomical Observatory in Italy. The arrival of the asteroid was not predicted by astronomers and was a surprise as it passed by the Earth. Director of NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies said that the asteroid approached undetected from the direction of the sun and no one saw it coming.

The asteroid was, in fact, first detected by California's Palomar Observatory 6 hours after it passed by the planet.

Many of the asteroids do not even cross the telescope's line of sight, which means that NASA has been able to detect only a fraction of Near Earth Objects (NEOs) like this one. This also poses danger as in case a potentially dangerous rock from outer space slipped through the gaps in the NEO-Surveillance systems, it could kill tens of thousands of people.

The latest asteroid is familiar to astronomers by the name 2020 QG and was initially called ZTF0DxQ.

Why should Sulfur dioxide be eliminated from the face of the earth?

Countless harmful gases are making the survival of this earth difficult by the minute and need to be addressed immediately. Pollution is a sensitive subject, and yet one of the most pressing issues in today’s world. Its increase has not only contaminated cities after cities, but it has also put the lives of thousands of people at risk. A lot of factories tend to dump their waste materials into the water, which is a source of supply to hundreds of villages for irrigation purposes. Similarly, when industry leaves poisonous gases containing oil hanging in the air, when coal is left unused and when a volcano erupts it all starts affecting the environment in the form of Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)

Most lethal viruses in the world

Viruses are microscopic yet extremely dangerous organisms on this planet. Many viruses cause mild infections; however, several others are known as the deadliest ones. Viruses are obligate parasites, which means that they require a host body to replicate and reproduce as they are completely inactive outside the host cell. Once these viruses enter a host body, they target the vulnerable cells and causes diseases. Viruses have the ability to cause neural, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastroenteritis, pharyngitis, sexually transmitted diseases, eye infections, skin infections and much more.

The exploration of Earth's minerals through exploration and mining

Earth is rich in minerals, which can help the world to progress. Many exploration companies have already set their wheels in motions to discover the treasure that lies beneath, and many companies have just started. One of these companies, called Skeena resources, has announced its contribution to the discovery of minerals in a place called Eskay Creek Property.

Many companies have reportedly done mining to unlock the assets of British Columbia's Golden Triangle over the years. Similarly, considering the fruitful results, Skeena Company has also set out to unravel the secrets beneath the Earth with the help of their skillful team of miners. Many people believe that every time mining is done, it does the trick, and you end up with a massive stock of undeniable treasures, but it is an absolute myth as there is only a 0.01% chance that you find valuable treasure underneath.
