It’s no secret that the general public’s attention span has taken a sharp turn for the worse. The statistics here show the shrinking number of minutes, even seconds people can hold their attention on a given subject. But the company found that people who use their app are using it for longer and longer stretches of time, suggesting that their attention is improving.

Google announced in this year’s ISTELive Edtech conference that it has partnered with Adobe on providing a licensed Adobe Express program across Chromebooks. The aim of this launch is to provide schools with easy access to Adobe Express so they can distribute the platform to students, hence encouraging and promoting creation of more immersive and innovative projects and experiments.

This map from AAAstateofplay shows the states in the US with the highest and lowest student/teacher ratios. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the average student/teacher ratio in public schools in the US is 16:1 during the 2017-2018 school year. In some schools and districts across the US the ratio can be much higher or lower. For instance, we can see on this map that states with lower student teacher averages are in blue and green. These include Maine at 11:1, North Dakota, Wyoming, Massachusetts and New York at 12:1 and Arkansas and Montana at 13:1 just to name a few.

Are Students in the United States Getting Too Much Homework?

The National PTA along with the National Education Association have come up with a homework guideline known as “The 10-Minute Rule”. It states that kids should be doing around 10 minutes of work every night for each grade level. So kids in 1st grade would have 10 minutes per night, kids in 2nd grade, 20 minutes up to 8th grade. Educators and child experts have found that there is a positive correlation with how well kids do in school in relation to the amount of homework they have if the 10 min rule is followed. Once kids get to between an hour and half to two hours of homework per night, the positive correlation with any additional homework and increasing scores drops off. Students who are getting over 2 hours of homework a night were not doing any better than the kids doing less than that.

With areas more affluent than others, more focus in recent years is being placed on the funding for public schools. To make virtual education easier, tech giant Google just introduced several features that include an updated Google Meet service for conferences and a brand new homework helper tool. 


Google Meet has been updated with a feature of a larger tiled view that will display up to 49 participants and it will be rolling out in September after being announced in June. The tiled view in Google Meet initially displayed 16 participants at a time when it was first introduced in April. The addition in the number of meeting participants that can be viewed at once will make the layout similar to Zoom's. 


In addition to the updated tiled view, Meet will also be getting a 'Jamboard' which is Google's digital whiteboard product. Another option that users will be able to access on Meet will allow blurring or replacing the background. 


Moreover, customers of the G Suit Enterprise for Education will have the option to create breakout rooms in Meet, that will break virtual classes into smaller group discussions. Teachers will also be able to keep track of attendance.
