The State of Democracy in Different Regions around the World

According to a survey by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), only 8% of the world’s population actually lives in a full, functioning democracy.

 

Meanwhile, another 37% of population lives in some type of “flawed democracy”, while 55% of the world does not live in democracy at all, based on the EIU’s latest Democracy Index Report.

 

Factors that have caused numerous declines to country democracy scores in recent years include Events such as the war in Ukraine and restrictive, long-lasting COVID-19 measures. Since the source report first began tracking scores in 2006, the global average has fallen from 5.52 to 5.29.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has recently issued a ban on some of China’s leading surveillance and telecom services, including Huawei, ZTE Corp, Dahua, Hytera, and Hikvision among others, that can no longer sell their telecom and video surveillance equipment the US.

 

While many are deeming the FCC’s decision as controversial, the agency has claimed that the attempts are in the country’s best interests in terms of national security.

How long did Israeli Prime Ministers serve the nation?

As the infographic shows, Benjamin Netanyahu has spent the longest time in office as the Prime Minister of Israel. He was the ninth elected Prime Minister of the country and had been in the position since 2009.

However, the current elections in the country resulted in the victory of Naftali Bennett as the newly elected Prime Minister for Israel. The right-wing party of Bennet won by an extremely close majority of 60 to 59. Bennet will have the power of Prime Minister till September 2023. Following the Australian Government’s action towards making changes to its proposed Media Bargaining Code, Facebook has announced its agreement to restore the Pages of Australian news publishers on its platform. The company is getting more time to negotiate separate deals with publishers and as a result, it would be able to launch Facebook News in the region.

 

“After further discussions, we are satisfied that the government has agreed to a number of changes and guarantees that address our core concerns about allowing commercial deals that recognize the value our platform provides to publishers relative to the value we receive from them," Facebook said in a statement about the new agreement.


A total of four amendments have been made to the Australian Government’s proposed code, among which, the main addition suggests that "A decision to designate a platform under the code must take into account whether a digital platform has made a significant contribution to the sustainability of the Australian news industry through reaching commercial agreements with news media businesses."

It is hard to keep track of the leaders, and other powerful positions were taken by World leaders when so much is happening around you. To help you get a clearer overview of who made it to the leadership position in the 15 most powerful countries in the world since the year 1970, we have prepared a timeline covering the whole history.

Starting from the year 1970, all the countries except UAE had their powerful leaders in charge. The entire 1970 period was about the Soviet Union and its leader Leonid Brezhnev. On the other hand, the U.S. was being led by Richard Nixon, who soon ended his reign due to infamous Watergate tapes, and his place was immediately filled by Mao Zedong but not for too long as two years later, his death news was announced all over the broadcasting channels.

An anti-monopoly group whose founder is working with Joe Biden’s transition team says that the Biden administration should expand antitrust cases against Google and Facebook. The group is named as The American Economic Liberties Project.

 

The recommendations offered by the group indicate how the Biden administration’s future policy-making is likely to be influenced. The group encouraged that the US Justice Department must make its stance clear on the antitrust action against Google by expanding the scope of litigation beyond search to other services offered by the company, including maps, travel and app store. The US Justice Department had sued the tech giant in October last year over dominating search and advertising.

The US government announced a major change for drone law last week, according to which, almost every drone in US airspace will need to broadcast their locations, along with the location of their pilots. The purpose behind this rule is to “address safety, national security, and law enforcement concerns regarding the further integration of these aircraft into the airspace of the United States”.

 

Google has responded to the law update and isn’t too happy with the decision. Google’s drone delivery subsidiary Wing published a post that says that the broadcast-only remote identification of drones may have unintended consequences for American consumers, such as letting observers track people’s movements, accessing information such as where they go and live, where and when they receive packages, etc. It further added that this type of surveillance would not be acceptable for American communities.

The number of County Court Judgments in the year 2019 reached 16,000, which evidently reflects on the unpaid debt of the UK. The primary reason why CCJs have observed a spiking increase in their numbers is that the people who receive CCJ for unpaid debt is particularly for lesser amounts. For instance, in the UK, mobile phone providers sell phones to people with smaller debts, i.e. £100- £200and when these buyers fail to pay for the purchased phones, a CCJ arrives at their doorstep hence giving a boost to the numbers.

Trump pledges to acquire the lands for the president border wall

The campaign by Trump to take possession of the American land situated on the southern border has led many landowners to submit to the lawsuits which have been filed against them. To build the President’s border wall, Trump ordered to file lawsuits against the landowners between the years 2017 and 2020. So far, the government has managed to claim 135 tracts, and according to the Government reports, there are still 991 tracts on the way.

The U.K. government planned to phase out the Huawei 5G technology and as part of that plan, it is banning the installation of the new Huawei 5G equipment from September of next year. The government announced back in July that it would be barring firms from buying new equipment form Huawei starting from January 2021, due to the national security concerns revolving around the Chinese tech company.  


This means that any telecoms companies that have stockpiled Huawei equipment ahead of January 2021 will not be able to use them for long-term 5G rollouts. Reports suggest that several companies have been stockpiling the equipment since summer. However, firms possessing old Huawei equipment will still be able to maintain it after September.  


On the other hand, matters of the ban enforcement and the laws regarding it will be set by a new legislation in the Parliament this week. Furthermore, telecoms companies could be fined up to 10 percent of turnover or £100,000 per day if they fail to comply with the new security standards, according to the Telecommunications Security Bill requirements.

Biden has been elected as the 46th President of the United States of America, and the inauguration ceremony is scheduled for January 2021. Joe Biden is currently the oldest President ever in the history of America; however, the former President Donald Trump is now the second oldest (as in age) President for the USA. Four years ago, when Trump was elected as the President, he aged 70 years at that time.

We know the United States for its boosting economy and financial power. But it is also a fact that its debt has highly increased in the last few years. The U.S. public debt, that has been taken from other governments, individual entities as well as business empires, amounts to quite a lot. However, is there a single administration that should be held responsible for this increasing debt? Not at all, this debt has been increasing each year. 


From the facts that we have, from 2009 until 2020 have contributed to the increase in U.S. debts. This means that both the recent Donald Trump administration, as well as the Obama administration in its two terms, has caused an increase in public debt. Debt has so far reached 21 trillion dollars, this latest figure has been until of 30 September of this year.

Data reveals American’s distrust in government before 2020 election 
American’s distrust in the federal government and the elected officials that represent them has been decreasing over the years and has seemingly hit an all-time low as we near closer to the 2020 election this upcoming Tuesday. Events like the COVID-19 pandemic, the election of President Donald Trump, protests and rioting, fake news and social media as well as the upcoming 2020 election have really increased distrust in the federal government for many Americans. 


Mike Donovan of Not Free America recently analyzed more than 1,700 Google search terms and keywords related to government distrust to find the most common government distrust search term in each state before the 2020 election. The findings show the most common government distrust search terms in each state across America. They also surveyed over 2,000 Americans across all 50 states to learn more about how much trust Americans have in their elected officials, the 2020 election process, the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, among many other topics. Let’s take a dive into what they found. 


“Deep State” was the most common government distrust search term in 15 states, followed by terms related to distrust in President Donald Trump which were the most common in 8 states. By and large the terms that Americans were searching for most largely fell in the line with the party that they voted for. States that leaned Democrat were much more likely to search for terms related to President Donald Trump lying or being dishonest. States that leaned toward the Republican party were more likely to search for terms related to the deep state which tends to fall in line with the words that the president uses.

As the US presidential elections closes in, the tensions rise among both parties. Recently, when the presidential debate aired on live television, people didn’t like it very much. Some deemed it as straight up boring while some found it funny how Biden called Trump a joker. The bottom line is that the US presidential elections are closing in.
