The Positive Impact of COVID-19 on Crime in the UK

The coronavirus has caused chaos and put a halt to activities of all kind. Be it personal or financial, or even — crime. It's really tough to think that a global pandemic could result in something positive. But it has happened nonetheless. While there has been a reduction in air pollution, another positive thing to come out of the crisis has been low crime rates. This has been the case for many countries, including the United Kingdom.

This downfall in crime rates can be credited to lockdown measures. Not all sorts of crimes have gone down. For instance, drug offences become greater than before. This can make sense as drugs won't really involve moving around much, for many people out there. The crimes that have been limited to a very high extent are robberies and sexual harassment since they involve social interaction and moving around.

Hackers: Who They Are and What They Want

The Internet is now at a stage where it has become inherent in our lives. We are dependent on it for almost all our daily tasks and even entertainment and education. This has proved to be true even more in the wake of the global pandemic this year. Whether you are just someone who loves surfing the Internet or you work in a cybersecurity department somewhere, with the rapid increase in hacking cases, it is important to get to know the types of hackers.

Hackers can be classified according to their intention of hacking. Some hackers just do it for the sake of fun and thrill, while others have a huge motive behind their act of cybercrime. Not all hackers are criminals though. There are ethical hackers- those who are not the 'bad guys'. An example of ethical hacking can be a scenario in which you say, report a social media account that is posing as you when in reality it is not. This is where the job of an ethical hacker may come in as they hack the fake account and take it down.

Protecting Consumer Data in the Era of Big Data

Living in an age of overwhelming data and information, it is pretty obvious that one needs to go out of their way to protect the privacy of others. With so many incidents of cyberattacks going on, it only makes sense that cybersecurity measures are being taken drastically. People fall prey to cyberattacks on a daily basis and it is not just big organisations that are being targeted by cybercriminals but small businesses and organisations make for easy targets as well.

Let's first make sense of what big data actually is. Big data is more about data that is crucial to an organisation on a daily basis, and it does not always necessarily have a huge volume. Such data is under threat when appropriate cybersecurity measures aren't taken. Examples may include infrequent change of passwords by employees, carelessly sharing personal details internally or externally, and so on. Many products and services operate online, therefore they have a lot of consumer data to handle.

Explosions in Iran: Planned Acts or Accidents?

The Western region of Tehran recently witnessed a power outage due to a string of explosions. These explosions took place at various places, namely a blast in a medical clinic, another one causing floods in an important area of shipping hubs, and a missile-production facility was targeted as well. Initially, Tehran had labelled these chain of explosions as a series of accidents. There links to each other seem highly likely due to the misfortunate events taking place in the vicinities of industrial, nuclear and military locations.

However, the blast on Natanz nuclear research on July 2, 2020, in Isfahan, Iran led to Iran admitting that they were being targeted and all these acts were indeed the part of a big sabotage plan by its enemies. With Iran being vocal about being targeted, other explosions have also fallen into suspicious activity and part of a bigger conspiracy. Now the main challenge for Iran is finding out the entity behind these attacks, as well as their response.

According to the senior adviser on science and nonproliferation at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, Olli Heinonen, the sole incident of Natanz nuclear research is enough for Iran to understand the involvement of foul-play. He also clarified that an attack of this level could only be possible with the attackers having complete details on the workshop designs and operations at Natanz, he clearly stated that Iran's nuclear and missile programs and their operations are not secretive and are likely exposed. He also stated that this was act was just a small warning and things could only escalate in the near future.

Shocking Acts of Theft by Employee

Your employees can make your company, but they can break it as well. Many companies suffer because of employee theft acts, the severity and type of which can vary. By employee theft, we do not necessarily mean the stealing of an actual tangible object. It is actually defined by the mishandling of the employer's assets. So it does not always have to be cash or say any valuable device.

According to the National Retail Security Survey (2017), internal employee theft was around 30 %. External retail crime and loss came out to be around 36.5%. The difference between these two isn't much, and while you can try your best to limit external crimes by gangs and shoplifters, it is likely that you'll be able to completely eliminate the risk. Employee theft, however, can be minimized to a pretty good extent and it's possible for you to even get rid of it entirely.

Can AI stop crime before it happens?
To many, the thought of Artificial Intelligence combating crimes – even before it occurs may seem like a scene from a sci-fi movie. However, many countries around the world including the UK, China, Denmark, Germany, India and the Netherlands have integrated facial recognition protocols and predictive tools to control criminal acts.

And the advancements in technology seems to be working!

In fact, several countries around the world are reporting lower rates of crime. Experts also say that technology can be very useful in detecting crime before it happens – and afterward to catch the culprits.

Of course, we should remember, that just like any form of technology – there may be some mishaps with the use of artificial intelligence tools. For example, accuracy always remains to be a concern as facial recognition algorithms often misidentify the subject. Especially those of color are many times misunderstood by the software.
