If someone collected all the trash you’ve thrown out in the past year, what would it look like? This visualization from TitleMax.com may be the closest thing to what would be sitting in that heap. The average individual typically produces more than 2,000 pounds of trash per year, or roughly 4.4 pounds per person per day. That’s a lot of garbage! What are the biggest items we waste in America? We toss out 854.2 pounds of wood materials, 91.53 pounds of yard trimmings, 220.93 pounds of food waste (which is particularly tragic considering how many people in this country are going hungry), and 187.77 pounds of corrugated boxes per person. That’s a lot of Amazon boxes! It’s important to also examine the items on our list that are thrown out in smaller amounts (such as HDPE containers) but may cause greater environmental concerns if not recycled. Before you toss that item in the trash, visualize your end-of-the-year pile. It might not be in your home anymore, but it certainly may be in a landfill not very far away!
