Bumble has revamped its app, leading to a new feature called ‘Opening Move,’ newly added ‘dating intention’ badges, and more.

Opening Move is specifically meant to give women a kickstart to their conversations with their matches. The feature provides a list of prewritten prompts that you can choose from and even add your own prompts to, that the app will send to all your matches in a new conversation. Some of these prompts are questions like ‘Who’s your dream dinner party guest (real or fictional)?’ and ‘What do you like about my profile?’ If and when the match responds, you can decide whether or not you want to continue the conversation. In case no move is made, the conversation will expire after 24 hours.

Match Group, the parent company of dating apps including Tinder, Plenty of Fish, and Match, has cut off its ties with the NGO Garbo that has been providing background checks to users on Match Group’s platforms.

Background checks first became a thing on Tinder in 2021 and were later offered on the other dating apps too. The tool had been allowing users to gather additional publicly available information about their potential dates, by just using their last name and phone number. The checks mainly provided information related to criminal records such as public reports about violence, past arrests, convictions, and restraining orders.

Founder of Garbo, Kathryn Kosmides, revealed the reasons for why the NGO decided to end its partnership with Match Group. According to her, Garbo has faced “continuous harassment and threats by bad actors” on Match Group’s platforms, as well as a lack of support and initiative from the company.

Meta has expanded its measures for the protection of underage users on Facebook Dating in the US. This means that users aged under 18 years will not be allowed to sign up for and access Facebook Dating.

This age verification tool, however, is not a regular one. It is powered by digital identity company Yoti, with whom Meta has been working since June of this year. Yoti’s systems are equipped with training on a large amount of global data of anonymous images belonging to a diverse range of people. As a result, the company can almost accurately determine the ages of people using video selfies.

According to Meta, it will launch the tool across its apps including Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Dating. During the test of the tool on Instagram, Meta discovered that about four times as many people were more likely to complete its age verification requirements as their attempts to edit their age from under 18 to over 18. This equated to “hundreds of thousands of people being placed in experiences appropriate for their age.”

Facebook is testing a video speed dating app as part of its experimental NPE (New Product Experimentation). The app is called ‘Sparked’ and it is currently in the initial testing phase. It has been designed to let users hold 4-minute long video chats with potential matches.

The ‘swiping’ move that is usually used in the dating apps today has been removed in Sparked, and with the video feature, users will have the option to hold short video chats with potential matches. There’s also the option to hold longer video chats to assess suitability.

They focused their attention on the main dating profile picture compiling insights into more than a dozen characteristics, including smiles, facial hair, attire, selfies, kids, and cars. Let us take a deeper look into what they found in their analysis.

How dating has changed for singles during the COVID-19 pandemic

The pandemic has forced many single people to think differently about how they approach both dating and romantic interactions with other people. Previously it was very easy to meet new people and go on dates in public. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed that because many people are afraid of meeting and interacting on dates because of health and safety concerns.

Basic Seltzer recently surveyed 2,000 unmarried millennials and Gen Zers to learn more about how sex and dating has changed during the pandemic. They wanted to see how people are adapting to virtual dating, virtual hookups and whether or not the same rules of dating apply to virtual dating during the pandemic. Let’s take a deeper look at the findings of their survey.

The first part of the survey asked respondents how they have dated during the pandemic and what were their takeaways from virtual dating. First let’s start out with the positive. Virtual daters during the pandemic said they were dealing with less games when it comes to dating. 79% of virtual daters said that people they dated were playing less games and were more straightforward with what they did and didn’t want from people they were dating.

Tech giants like Facebook doesn’t know the word “stop.” They keep on expanding as much as possible even when they have an antitrust probe over them the entire time. Facebook gave competition to apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge by launching Facebook Dating. The feature was rolled out in the USA last year and has now paved its way into Europe.

The platform has around 1.5 billion active users, which will make most of them try out the new feature. Ever wonder how many people would have left using other dating apps after the launch of Facebook Dating?

The security team at Check Point has warned people of the risk of using dating apps where a lot of cases have been reported leading to ransom, especially in the last two years. Dating apps have become an important source of actionable data for cyber criminals as users on these apps share much more private information and more photos than they do on other platforms.

One of the most popular dating apps, OkCupid, has about 50 million registered users in more than 100 countries. It is part of Match Group, an online dating world that has other platforms under it as well, such as Tinder, Plenty Of Fish, and Match. Check Point wanted to test how easy it would be for hackers to hijack accounts on OkCupid and found out that the task would be actually very convenient for attackers. According to Check Point, the access to everything within an account on OkCupid was easily available, including personal details and identity, messages, and photos.

Check Point identified a vulnerability in OkCupid's link scheme which could be spoofed by malicious links disguised as ones belonging to the app itself. The links provided a route to exfiltrate data, hence allowing to trigger actions within the platform. A user that would click the link would 'credentialize' themselves, hence providing the hacker complete access to their account.

How Dating Apps are Making Users Vulnerable to Potential Harm

Group of Dating Sites Expose Data of Thousands of Users

A group of dating websites exposed 2.5 million records including explicit images, audios, chats, and payment receipts of users. According to researchers, hundreds of thousands of users were affected as a result of poorly stored data.

The data was from nine dating sites that mainly cater to sexual activity, the sites include Xpal, BBW Dating, Cougary, Gay Daddy Bear, 3somes, Casualx, Herpes Dating, GHunt, and SugarD.

Online Dating Is the Way to Meet In 2020
If you met your partner in 1995, chances are the bar, party with friends, school, or work was probably the first meeting spot. However, with the emergence of technology and dating apps like Tinder and eHarmony – a lot has changed in the dating arena. In fact, a recent survey by Stanford University indicates that the majority of couples today are opting to meet their partner online.

The survey queried around 5,421 U.S. adults regarding the ‘first meeting’ with their partners. While traditional meeting points such as acquaintance through friends, parties, and restaurants was common during the 1995 era, the year 2017 saw a sharp rise in ‘meeting through online dating platforms.’

In fact, Stanford University reports that the number of heterosexuals who met their partner on an online medium increased from 2% to 37% between the years of 1995 and 2017. On the other hand, meeting at a bar/restaurant has also increased between the surveyed years from 19% to 27%.
