Digital Photography 101 The Exposure Triangle

Every quality photo begins with exposure. Even if you catch a great subject at the perfect moment with strong framing, everything is lost if you blow the exposure. Photographers who shoot in automatic mode are accustomed to the camera taking care of all the settings. But, as smart as digital cameras have become, they aren’t perfect.

Elevating your picture-taking from good to great requires a general understanding of the three elements of exposure: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Understand the interplay between these three elements, and you will be able to anticipate great photographs, rather than wait for happy coincidences.

If you’re like one of the more than 86 million Americans who watched Sesame Street as a child, you’ll probably remember nearly all of these classic characters.

Regardless, all of these muppets have their place.

As the show makes its move to premium channel HBO, we can be sure that Sesame Street has no plans to stop at 50 years! Celebrate 50 years of Sesame Street by exploring the history of 50 classic characters from the show in this infographic from PlaygroundEquipment.com.

The Melting Points of 80 Elements, Substances, and Metal Alloys

The melting point is considered to be the temperature at which a substance changes it’s physical state from that of a solid to a liquid. It can also be the same temperature as the freezing point, which is the reverse process when a liquid changes into a solid.

This infographic from AlansFactoryOutlet.com explores the melting point of 80 well-known elements, substances, and metal alloys that can be found on Earth and in the atmosphere. Its ascending format starts out with the lowest melting point, also the freezing point, of Hydrogen at -434.4 degrees Fahrenheit, which is only 24 degrees warmer than that of the Boomerang Nebula. The chart ends with the highest melting point of Tantalum Carbide, a whopping 6,960 °F.

Although this high melting point doesn’t even come close to the temperature of the sun, which is 9,941°F! You may be surprised to find that substances such as beeswax have similar melting points to that of metals like potassium.

The 88 Constellations and Their Brightest Stars

Did you know that in contemporary astrology, the International Astronomical Union recognizes 88 constellations? This number includes 42 that depict animals, 29 that depict inanimate objects, and another 17 that depict either humans or mythological characters. The largest constellation on this fascinating infographic is the Hydra, which occupies 3.2% of the Southern night sky. It's also commonly viewed as a water serpent!

The best time that you can see it is in the January. Just behind the Hydra in the Top 3 are the Ursa Major at 3.1% (#2) and the Virgo, also at 3.1% (#3). When it comes to these constellations, early astrologers had the understanding that it took 12 lunar cycles for the sun to return to its original position.

From there, they were able to identify 12 different constellations that related to the progression of the seasons, and then proceeded to name them after people or animals. What's your favorite constellation on this chart from Sleepopolis.com?
