A Compendium of Sesame Street Characters

Most people don’t think of Big Bird as being middle aged, but as Sesame Street turns 50 this year, this now-iconic muppet has been on air since 1969! If you’re like one of the more than 86 million Americans who watched Sesame Street as a child, you’ll probably remember nearly all of these classic characters.

Many of them, such as Bert & Ernie, Kermit the Frog, and Oscar the Grouch, have been with the show since Day One. Still others, like Grover, Snuffleupagus, and Count von Count, made their debut within the next few years. If you have children (or grandchildren) now watching the show, you may see some newer faces that were not there before, like Baby Bear, Abby, and Mrs. Crustworthy. Regardless, all of these muppets have their place.

As the show makes its move to premium channel HBO, we can be sure that Sesame Street has no plans to stop at 50 years! Celebrate 50 years of Sesame Street by exploring the history of 50 classic characters from the show in this infographic from PlaygroundEquipment.com.
