In an open letter / blog post, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has shared the streaming platform’s developmental plans for the year of 2024. From changes to its mobile platform to collaboration tools and more, it seems like the company has some major upgrades in store for its customers.

While Twitch has not revealed specific details about the products that it plans to launch, its vice president of community product, Jeremy Forrester, has emphasized three main areas of development. These include sharing of content across other platforms, enabling collaboration between streamers, and upgrades to the mobile version.

Twitch has New Plans for an Improved User Experience in 2024

Twitch is testing a new Discovery Feed that was first announced last month, with select users where they can explore content from creators on the platform. According to Twitch, the feed will initially display videos in a horizontal format and will later be evolved to show them in a vertical format. Smells like TikTok, doesn’t it?

Twitch will begin testing ‘popular and featured’ content in the Discovery Feed and moving forward, will include ‘exclusively featured’ clips in the feed. For now, the integration is only a ‘limited experience’ as described by the platform itself, meaning that it will help it gather important feedback as well as train its algorithm to ensure improved user experience.

In another X post, Twitch added that creators can become part of the Discovery Feed experiments by selecting clips that they want to add in the ‘featured’ pool. This option is now available to all streamers and editors on Twitch.

After receiving pushback from advertisers and viewers on hot tub streams, live streaming service Twitch has decided to launch a separate category for the streams. The platform has named the category “Pools, Hot Tubs, and Beaches”.

The new Twitch category is meant to let creators stream what they want and also offer advertisers an easier way to stop ads from running on streams that they don’t approve of.

Earlier this week, what Twitch called a mistake, led to ad suspension for some hot tub streamers without warning. The company later revealed that it is now working with creators to “restore ads where appropriate.”

Twitch turns down Trump’s channel indefinitely

According to Twitch’s spokesperson, Donald Trump’s account from the platform has been disabled for an indefinite period. The decision was made after the shocking attack and Trump’s encouragement of the US Capitol mob’s attack. Moreover, Trump’s incendiary rhetoric also damages the community; hence the company decided to turn his account down and save the community from further violence.

However, his account is still live, which means that his Twitch profile and archives will be available, but Trump won’t be able to stream until the channel is disabled. Twitch banned Trump’s channel temporarily for two weeks back in June 2020 as well because of the “hateful conduct” that he streamed.

Twitch just banned the usage of the term "simp", which is commonly used by the twitch community to refer to men who seem desperate to get women’s attention. The word has been banned as Twitch updates its harassment policy, that deems the word as an insult. Words like "virgin" and "incel" will be banned too.

The new policy is expected to come into effect on 22nd of January. The policy will address sexual harassment by imposing strict rules around it.

The reason why Twitch is going to ban the term "simp" is because the company believes that it is a sexually-focused and derogatory term that negatively targets a person. The other words, "incel" and "virgin" will not be banned in every situation, but only where they are used for harassment. “We would take action if they are used repeatedly in a harassing manner,” a Twitch spokesperson said.

Twitch is one of the leading online streaming websites with billions of active users. There is a massive variety of genres that are streamed on Twitch. However, the thing that made Twitch stand out amongst every other live streaming site was its uninterrupted videos but, it won’t be the same anymore as Twitch will soon start running ads automatically in between the live streams.

The idea has been implemented practically after a lot of dialogues because the company is pretty much aware of the backlashes it is going to face. The company will run the ads on the channels that are affiliated and partnered with it, whereas; the creator would be paid a good amount for getting the ads run in the middle of their videos. Nonetheless, every channel would be enabled for a picture-in-picture view; hence, the ads are not likely to cause annoying disruptions. Users who have subscribed to a particular channel will enjoy the live stream without any ads; however, users with Twitch’s subscription would also enjoy no-ads perks.
