Streaming services are the new norm these days. People spend hours on end on streaming services. The amount of content we are consuming today is more than the previous decade or so. Since the birth of live streaming platforms, live streaming industry has grown a lot.


The most popular live streaming platform is Twitch. It is the fastest growing live streaming platform ever. There is an abundance of people on the platform online at any given point in time. YouTube also as live stream and is another popular spot for conducting live stream videos. The live stream industry has grown into a genre of its own. There are now live streamers who are popular in their own rights. Many of these streamers have become famous online on one of these platforms.


Gaming is the most popular genre for live streaming. Audience love to see people game and when you are good at it, you have a better chance at racking up more views. All the popular streamers like Ninja, Valkyrae, Pokimane, Turner “TFue” Tenney and other people have gotten their fame by playing games. A few years ago, Fortnite was the most watched and most streamed game of all time. Today, the indie sensation, Among Us, has rocked the world with its minimalistic gameplay combines with the cunning of players.


The live streaming industry has racked up good numbers in 2020, mostly due to the lockdown. Last quarter, audience spent over 7.71 billion hours watching live streams. This quarter, the number is slightly lower than previous quarter at 7.46 billion hours. In this quarter, Facebook Gaming surpassed the billion hours watch time for the first time. YouTube Gaming saw significant growth this time with an increase in watch time of 156 million hours from the last quarter. As for Twitch, it now represents around 91.1 percent of market share for hours streamed. This is 14.5 percent increase from last quarter.
