Visualizing the Unicorn Landscape in 2019

It was only six years ago that venture capitalist Aileen Lee coined the term “unicorn” to describe any privately-held startup worth $1 billion or more. At the time, such valuations were so rare that they deserved a special name – but since then, it’s fair to say that the landscape has shifted dramatically. The startup boom intensified, and capital flowed into private companies at an unprecedented pace.

Visualizing the Healthtech Revolution

Imagine being a patient in the early 19th century, when all ailments were considered “humors” to be ejected from the body. To restore balance, various techniques such as diets, natural herbs, or bloodletting with leeches were used – the only “technology” available at the time. Even when the basic structure of modern medicine came into place, the average life expectancy was just 34 years old in 1913. A patient from that era would surely be amazed by the leaps and bounds that healthcare has undergone since then, thanks to the influence of technology.

A future powered by renewables is not in the distant horizon, but rather in its early hours. This new dawn comes from a global awareness of the environmental impacts of the current energy mix, which relies heavily on fossil fuels and their associated greenhouse gas emissions.

Technologies such as wind, solar, and batteries offer renewable and clean alternatives and are leading the way for the transition to clean energy. However, as with every energy transition, there are not only new technologies, but also new material demands.

Today’s infographic comes to us from the Copper Development Association and outlines the special role of copper in renewable power generation, energy storage, and electric vehicles.

An Analysis of the Top 50 Highest-Grossing Animated Films of All Time

What was your favorite children’s movie growing up? What are your children’s favorite movies? Watching animated films as a family has been a cherished pastime for generations. We have encountered many beloved, iconic characters along the way, like Woody Aladdin, Merida, Elsa, Wall-E, Sully, Shrek, Simba, Moana, and more. Often these characters embark on epic adventures through multiple films. By analyzing the top 50 highest-grossing animated movies of all time, we discover that half of them are sequels.

Another fascinating tidbit from this data is that 60% of main protagonists are animal, alien, or monster rather than human. PG triumphs over G as the most successful MPAA rating. Other facts are not so amusing. Only 18% of protagonists starring in the 50 highest grossing animated movies are female, and only four are not 100% white. While these figures are troubling, recent films like Coco, Moana, and The Princess and the Frog are beginning to break this mold.

The Meaning of 52 Car Dashboard Indicators

Every driver knows that panicked feeling that occurs when you see a symbol light up on the dashboard in the midst of a drive. Drivers wonder how serious the issue is and if they should immediately stop and take action. But knowing the meaning behind the many symbols (52 of them to be exact!) can bring peace of mind to those mid-drive. This infographic is a great resource for drivers and shares the meaning behind the 52 common warning lights that can appear on a car’s dashboard.

The dashboard lights are colored coded by their severity: red lights are a warning and require immediate attention, amber colored are advisory lights to make you aware of an issue that doesn’t need immediate action, and blue/green/white dash lights require no attention and are there to make you aware of a function.

When The Hudson Motor Car Company first introduced dashboard indicators in the 1930s, many drivers disliked them and referred to them as “idiot lights” because they made it harder to detect issues early on like the prior gauges had. But dashboard indicators have greatly evolved over time and there are now 52 different issues that our car can alert us to!

The Evolution of Hydrogen

With one proton and one electron, hydrogen sits at the very beginning of the periodic table. Despite hydrogen being the most common molecule in the universe, it is rarely found in its elemental state here on Earth. In fact, almost all hydrogen on the planet is bonded to other elements and can only be released via chemical processes such as steam reforming or electrolysis.
