Germany's Federal Cartel Office is carrying out proceedings against Apple over anti-competitive behavior related to its App Store, and other services and products. It will be decided in the proceedings if Apple’s ecosystem holds enough power to make it difficult for other companies to challenge it.

President of Germany's Federal Cartel Office, Andreas Mundt, explained that the focus of the investigations will be on examining Apple’s “extensive integration across several market levels, the magnitude of its technological and financial resources and its access to data.” He continued to say that the operation of the ‌App Store‌ will also be assessed, since it “enables Apple in many ways to influence the business activities of third parties.”

The main goal of the investigation is to prohibit the company from "engaging in anti-competitive practices" in case it is found to be of significance across markets.

The 5G revolution and what changes it will bring

5G internet is the next big thing for the internet. The comparison between 4G and 5G is striking and never has any other generation seen such spikes in internet speed and performance difference. 5G is noticeably faster than 4G but the market for 5G is still very immature. This technology is only active in four countries.

In comparing the download speeds of 4G and 5G networks, we have seen a huge difference. According to data analysis, Saudi Arabia had the highest download speed than any other country with 414.2 Mbps, which is 14 times higher than the download speed it is getting on 4G. South Korea has some of the fastest broadbands and mobile network and even with 4G it holds up exceptionally well. Even so, the 5G networks amplify the download speeds to 312.7 Mbps, which is five times faster than its 4G network.

World’s biggest economies

The two constant names that pop up in our minds every time someone says ‘biggest economies’ are China and the United States of America. These two countries keep on changing positions but never go below the second place. In 2019, China was leading the board by holding the first position in the world’s largest economy list. As per the World Bank, China had an adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) of even higher than $22.5 Trillion.

The International Monetary Fund is monitoring China’s economy, and they have predicted that in 2020 a slower growth of its economy of about 1.2 percent due to the current pandemic situation of coronavirus. Whereas the United States resting in second place is projected to face a GDP decrease of $20.6 Trillion, which makes around 6 percent.

Will Germans accept the COVID-19 app?
So finally, Germany has launched its new ‘Corona Warning app’ that aims to track infection chains and curb the spread of COVID-19. The app is being highly praised by experts. It is also very easy to use and available in both – English and Germany.

However, the German community is reluctant to download the app.

The reason: Privacy concerns!

As with every new technological app, the issue surrounding the privacy settings arises. And with Germany seeing a fair share of dictatorships and surveillance in the past – the citizens cannot be blamed.

The German language is famous for some really long nouns. This is because German nouns, verbs, prepositions and adjectives are like lego bricks; you can stick them together in almost any way to create new words that encapsulate new concepts. This gives the language a special ability to name just about anything. You could call it the German language’s lego brick-like quality, but why does German rely on such an elaborate process to name things as simple as squirrels? When broken down into their separate components, the names of familiar animals mutate into bizarre new creatures. (Flowchart made for Babbel magazine where you can learn some Animal German names.)
