Busiest Airports in the World, by Passenger Count

 

Airports can be the most crowded and stressful places in the world because of the slow-moving queues and bustling gates. Regardless of the negative aspects associated with commercial air travel, on a general note, it is an impressive system, with the biggest air transit hubs recording passenger traffic numbers that rival the populations of large countries.

 

The Infographic used here has data from Airports Council International (ACI) to rank the top 10 busiest airports in the world, looking at total passengers enplaned and deplaned, with passengers in transit counted once.

The US Customs and Border Protection has submitted a filing to the Federal Register to expand the ongoing biometric exit program conducting facial recognition, to all air an land ports, and to shift the program’s focus to facial recognition only instead of alternate methods like fingerprinting. The filing will be open to public comment until the 21st of December.

 

Biometric exit was first deployed in 2017 and has operated as a pilot program at a limited number of ports in order to assess its viability. As part of the pilot authorization, Customs officials could only collect data from select ports and travelers. With the proposed rule, however, border agencies would be able to continue expanding testing as necessary.

 

As part of the new proposed rule, any individual going through customs on the way in or out of the country would be required to have their face photographed and undergo a facial recognition program. US citizens will also be subject to the rule, with the exception of having the option to opt out.

Travel Industry Sees a Historic Financial Loss Due To COVID-19
The American travel and tourism sector is seeing the most devastating impact from the COVID-19 outbreak. According to a new report by the U.S. Travel Association and Oxford Economics, the U.S. airlines are estimated to suffer a $519 billion decline in direct travel expenditure, translating into a $1.2 trillion loss in economic output.

Analysts say that the financial scenario of the travel industry is 9 times worse than the impact it faced after 9/11.

Travel industry revenue is expected to decrease 81% over the next couple of months while the annual decline will be approximately 45%.

With flights grounded all over the world, employment in the travel industry is also suffering and forecasted to result in 8 million job losses by the end of April.

The report also highlighted the different sectors related to the travel industry and their share of financial loss due to the global health pandemic.

For instance, food services will see the highest fall of $128 billion. Lodging will be impacted as well and is forecasted to see a loss of $112 billion. Moreover, the grounded airline fleets will equate to a loss of $97 billion in direct spending.

Coronavirus Fear: Airlines Face Severe Loss
The novel coronavirus outbreak has impacted the economy worldwide but the airline industry has faced the worst hit. After the epidemic broke out, government agencies have requested travelers to minimize tourism while businesses have also cut down on their trips – giving airlines a significant number of cancellations. In fact, many airlines forced to fly their planes half-empty since many flyers are not comfortable traveling during the epidemic. 

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) also anticipates that the losses incurred by airlines are much higher than originally estimated. The IATA represents some 290 airlines compromising 82 % of global air traffic and predict that the airlines can suffer from 11% loss in passenger revenue this year – equating to $63 billion.

Previously, health authorities assumed that the impact would be greatly confined to the markets associated with China. However, the virus is spreading at a phenomenal speed and the IATA says that the airline industry may have to incur losses of up to $113 billion in 2020 alone.
