Is Blocking the Internet too Costly?

Russia has caused the most expensive internet blockage of 2022 by first controlling the access and then blocking it specifically to social media sites and news outlets. This data is in accordance with tech company Top 10 VPN. The service puts the economic cost at $21.6 billion in the country between the attack of Ukraine in February and the end of the year. Since the blockages are country-wide, the large number of people affected becomes the reason of the high price tag.

A study was recently conducted on the effectiveness of Netflix VPN bans across different VPN platforms. Since Netflix provides its content on the basis of regions, this means that not all TV shows and films are available to watch in every country.

As a result, many users utilize VPN software to get access to Netflix content that may not be legally available to them. For instance, a user from a South Asian country could use a VPN service to get access to a server in a European country.

VPNs that fail to protect users’ personal data

VPNs are believed to be the most secure way of private browsing, but unfortunately, there are a lot of VPNs that fail to protect its users’ private data. Most of the people use VPN apps with a view that there is no risk involved and their data is secured completely, but that is not the truth. Numerous VPN applications on Google Play Store are likely to leak the data of their users. Pro Privacy performed an analysis on 250 VPN applications available on Google Play Store for free and found out that 79 apps out of them were unable to protect the personal information of the customers.

People rely on VPNs without investigating whether the app is authentic or not to keep their identity anonymous, and according to the study, it is predicted that VPNs will gain more users in the coming years. The VPN apps are downloaded more than 80 million times and will continue to grow.

As per the Pro Privacy reports, the apps that failed to provide basic security to the users is mainly because they use IPv4, which is an older version of the 32-bit protocol. Previously, this protocol had the ability to identify different devices and assign various variables, and the protocol could hold around 4.3 billion unique addresses for the users. But, as more and more people are using VPNs, it has resulted in outdating the unique addresses and the newer version, i.e., IPv6 took over. The IPv6 is the latest version protocol having 128 bit that can provide up to 340 undecillion unique addresses.

A Chinese-owned app called Tuber has just been launched, that allows access to domestically banned content on Western social media sites like YouTube. The app apparently is the first product of a Chinese tech firm that is allowing users to bypass the Great Firewall.

The Chinese cybersecurity firm that has launched the app is called Qihoo 360 and it is the biggest tech firm in the country.

Tuber is not yet available for download on Apple’s App Store, but has been downloaded millions of times from other sites.

New Chinese-Owned App Allows Access to Banned Content on Social Media Sites

Recently, interest in Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) has increased as TikTok is being banned or threatened to be restricted in several countries. The Vice President of ExpressVPN observed that there was an increased number of governments around the globe that were trying to control the access of information to their citizens.

VPNs are used to access blocked sites and services, therefore they are used by a lot of people around the world. ExpressVPN has over 3000 servers across 94 countries.  There was a 10% increase in its week-over-week traffic following the announcement of a potential ban on TikTok by the U.S. government. Similarly, the service in Australia and Japan also experienced a 41% and 19% increase in traffic, respectively, after their governments made the same announcement. In India, the service experienced a 22% WoW jump in traffic. In Hong Kong, as a result of the enactment of the national security law, TikTok voluntarily pulled out and ExpressVPN saw an increase of 10% in traffic growth.

According to a Hong Kong media scholar, VPN is no ''magic bullet'' as governments can make it hard for citizens to access VPNs by removing them from local app stores. In order for someone to register in another regional app store, it still won't be a convenient process as they will have to face obstacles such as the requirement of a local credit card. Similarly, governments can also illegalize the use of VPN services by imposing fine on users and even imprisoning VPN vendors.

Ensure your privacy by using VPN

Your privacy is something that no one else should infiltrate into. If we talk about internet usage, you cannot even imagine how much those nosey parkers have intercepted into your personal browsing. If you are surfing the internet without VPN, your connections become highly susceptible to get hacked, and you leave every single trace of your usage, which can be seen by the people interrupting your internet traffic.

Browsing Anonymously: Is It Really Anonymous?

Privacy is top of mind for many people these days. Unclear privacy policies, rampant data collection and high-profile data breaches can lead us to second guess our information’s safety — even when it’s guarded by respected institutions. In fact, Americans reportedly trust credit card companies more than the federal government to protect their personal information.

To combat this uncertainty, security experts commonly recommend using virtual private networks (VPNs) and secure browsers to keep your browsing history and personal information off the grid. The reality, however, is that these solutions can’t completely keep your activity private and safe.

Benefits of Using a Virtual Private Network

A Virtual Private Network is one solution to establishing secured network connections. VPNs are normally used by businesses or organizations rather than by individuals, but virtual networks can be reached from inside a home network as well. Compared to other technologies, VPNs offers several advantages, particularly benefits for wireless local area networking. For anyone looking to provide a secure network for its client base, a VPN offers the most benefits to users.
