Help Your Kids Understand the Value of Money

After a layoff in late 2015, finances became tight. My wife and I took on consulting jobs to keep the lights on, but in early 2017, I was completely out of work for a time. When our daughter complained about not going out to eat as often, or doing as many fun activities, we had to talk to her about the effects of jobs and money. We tried to clearly demonstrate how many advantages she’d had to date, as well as how important cash flow is to getting the things you want.

Now that things are back on track, she better understands conversations about give and take when making financial decisions: why we buy a certain brand of food, or why we choose to purchase something that’s good enough, rather than the very best. When we have conversations and price comes up, she can vocalize and rationalize to herself about how to make these kinds of decisions. Now, for birthdays and other gift-giving occasions, even if the money is coming out of our pockets (not her piggybank), we give her a budget with which to work. It’s our goal to make sure she knows the value of money, as well as how to weather financial hardships.

The Richest and Poorest County by State

Which counties across America are the richest? Loudoun, Virginia takes claim as being the wealthiest county in the United States, with an average household income of $134,600. This infographic looks at the wealthiest and poorest counties in every U.S. state, all based on the median household income. The data is pretty surprising too! Several states show huge disparities too, including Virginia, New Mexico, Colorado, Maryland, Tennessee, Georgia, and California.

In New Mexico, for example, the median household income is $114,700, whereas in Luna County, it's much lower at an average of $28,200. Another example would be in Colorado, where Douglas County has a median household income of $112,400, while Costilla's average sits at $27,200. Based on the data, the poorest county in the entire country would be Holmes County in Mississippi, which shows a median household income of only $22,000. Mississippi's richest, on the other hand, would be Madison County, where the average is $65,900. Where's your county fall?

Every Pizza The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ordered

Cowabunga, dude! This infographic from LibertyCruise.nyc looks at the favorite pizza toppings of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as seen on their classic television show. To say the least, these are very unique. While we've seen other fictional characters enjoy a slice of pizza or two over the years, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might just love pizza more than anyone else. One pie that Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Raphael, and

Donatello enjoyed (on Episode 39: "Green with Jealousy") was one that was topped with peanut butter and clams. Grossed out yet? Other combinations of pizza toppings included granola and licorice, chocolate sprinkles and clam sauce, guacamole and marshmallows, and one with both bananas and anchovies! At different times throughout the show, the brand of pizza changes for the Turtles, with both Domino's and Pizza Hut making appearances. In their 1990 film, they were seen eating Domino's pizza throughout, whereas it was Pizza Hut for their "Coming Out of their Shells" tour. How many of these would you try?

How the Right Paint Colors Can Transform Your House into a Home

When I bought my first house, I knew one thing: The beige uniformity of the walls had to go. My nesting instinct kicked in hard and told me this house couldn’t really become my home until I added my colors to the place. I was excited and oh so naive. The next day found me in a daze, lost among the seemingly endless, looming shelves filled with paint cans at my local Lowe’s. I clutched two dozen paint swatches.

My experience goes to show that painting a home is far more complicated than grabbing a bucket of paint from the hardware store, popping the lid, and slapping a coat of Stars Forever (which is apparently a shade of blue) onto the walls. If you are as equally paint-innocent as I was, or if you’re just interested in knowing more, allow me to take you under my paint-spattered wing and explain what I wish I had known before venturing into the paint department.

Why Food Delivery Isn’t Going Anywhere

Why pick up your food when you can get it delivered? Sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day to prepare your own meals. And if you’re throwing a party or planning a work lunch, you would definitely be in a bind if you had to make all that food yourself. Luckily, food delivery is a convenient and affordable solution, especially if you need to feed a lot of people.

According to the NPD Group, one of the largest market research companies in the world, there are 1.7 billion food delivery service visits annually. Not surprisingly, young adults are the heaviest users of food service delivery, representing 56 percent of delivery orders.

How to Establish a Mission-Driven Culture

If you pay attention to business trends, you may have noticed some chatter about creating a mission-driven culture. That’s shorthand for a company that is aligned with its purpose and the difference it hopes to make in the world.

Research shows millennials care about social issues more than previous generations. In fact 68 percent of millennials say creating change in the world is a personal goal they actively pursue (42 percent of baby boomers feel the same way). This easily translates to the work world: millennials want to know what an employer stands for before they inquire about salary. So if the rising workforce generation often chooses a company partly or wholly based on an aligned set of values, you can understand why having a company mission is so important in the first place.

How to Make a Private Oasis in Your Own Backyard

Is your yard a welcoming outdoor space where you enjoy spending your time, or is it something you pass through in order to get somewhere else? To create the former, and maybe improve your home’s value, it may be time to give your yard a little TLC. This may mean a quick weekend project or a full redesign managed by a landscape architect, but either way, it’s important to plan and budget.

The American Society of Landscape Architects recommends starting with a budget of 5–10% of your home’s worth, especially if you’re trying to increase your property’s value. Spend more on the “maximum value” features, which includes patios and trees. To reduce or eliminate watering costs, look into xeriscape landscaping, which also generally requires less maintenance.

What You Should Know About BITCOIN AND TAXES

The usage of Bitcoin has become widespread over the last couple of years, although many users of the cryptocurrency remain uncertain of their tax obligations regarding its usage. If you make a profit from using Bitcoin, you are obligated to pay tax on this profit, even if you don’t intend to retain it.

However, there is a set threshold under which you may be exempt from tax on Bitcoin (in Ireland, it’s €1,270 a year). From specifying Bitcoin tax obligations to what can be deducted and what must be disclosed, this infographic helps to provide a useful starting point on the subject.
