Indian executive of Facebook opposed applying rules on a political party member

India is the biggest market by users for Facebook having more than 400 million active users currently. But, the company is facing heat because of a report which claimed that Facebook compromised its policies to support a political party.

Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is the ruling government in India and the opposition party, i.e., the Indian National Congress, criticized Facebook for its favoritism to the other party. On Friday, a Wall Street Journal report claimed that the Indian public-policy executive of Facebook, Ankhi Das supported some members from BJP in creating hate posts without following the hate post policies. It was also reported that around three more members from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party were supported from the inside to promote and participate in violence. Das stated that punishing members from Modi’s party for violating the rules would adversely affect the business in India.
Ankhi Das has been receiving threats on social media for which she filed a police complaint, tweeted by Nistula Hebbar, an Indian journalist.
One of Facebook’s spokesperson states that the company strictly prohibits promoting hate and violence, and the policies are enforced globally without supporting any big name or party.

Indian National Congress’s former President Rahul Gandhi tweeted that Bharatiya Janata Party controls the Facebook and WhatsApp in India and use it as a medium to spread hatred and fake news to influence the electorate. A few more big names from various Indian political parties shared similar posts.

BJP’s officials didn’t leave the show but bombarded the oppositions with tons of responses.
