The Evolution of Manga #Infographic

Manga has a long and illustrous history steeped in its home country and its unique culture. Japan has gone through imperialism and democracy and myths that cannot be paralleled by any other modern states. Throughout its different rulers, art and culture flourished and developed, and today Japan has a distinctive culture and art movements that are characteristically Japanese. Manga is one of those art forms that developed and flourished in Japan, but is revered around the world.

Manga has its roots in Kibyoshi, Japanese picture books popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, and were considered the first purely adult picture books for adults. Some people assume and suggest that Manga was first inspired by scrolls in the 12th centure that were drawn on, but Isao Takahata, and others like him maintain that there is no real connection between the scrolls and modern Manga. Others still think that Manga was inspired by American films and cartoons.

10 Top-Grossing Films Directed by Women

In the history of directing, there were many women to whom fiction and non-fiction films owe great successes, including international ones. Women started making great films in the 1910s, and after half a century they completely captured the industry. Statistically, this profession remains masculine, but there are more and more exceptions: recently, for example, Lena Dunham and Julia Lee have added to this list.

We have selected ten women directors from all over the world, whom newcomers can quite equal, and we tell you which films they should pay attention to first of all. Looking at the results of the global BBC Culture poll, one aspect is shocking the most. 209 critics posted their lists of the top 10 films in a foreign language. Of these respondents, 94 were women, that is, 45%, and yet only 4 women directors were in the top 100: Chantal Ackerman (“Jeanne Dilman, Commerce Embankment 23, Brussels 1080”), Claire Denis (“Good Work”) , Agnes Varda (“Cleo 5 to 7”) and Katya Lund (co-director of “City of God”).

In the top 100 there were more films made by men named Jean - 7 films than films made by women. This alarming result puts the current conversation about the shortage of female filmmakers in a wider context: being deprived of the opportunity to engage in their craft in the cinema, women run the risk of being excluded from its history.
