The Fight to Keep College Classrooms Filled

There has been a general trend in colleges and school campuses closing, and in some cases, permanently shutting down. From 2016 to 2019, 86 colleges shut down or merged with other schools, and even more, 53 colleges closed permanently during the 2019-2020 school year.

In 2020, 56% of US college students said they could no longer afford their tuition, as they needed to figure out a new way to pay because of the impact of COVID-19. While the pandemic has undoubtedly contributed to fewer enrollments, there are other non-COVID related factors that have steadily become larger issues prior to 2020.

No experience doesn’t mean cannot land a great job, but you have to start somewhere. This is where a resume comes into play. How Is GenZ Doing College Differently?

The generation Z cohort has begun to graduate from college, but they are handling it a little differently than previous generations. For starters, they are racking up as many college credits as they can while still in high schools - nearly half of GenZ students in high school have already earned college credits. They know that college is important in an age where low-wage, low-hour jobs are more common and high-wage high-hour jobs are disappearing.

But they also know that spending all four years in college is expensive and they don’t want to graduate with mountains of student loan debt, which will hinder their ability to achieve financial stability after graduation. They spend more time volunteering than working, believing that community service is going to be more valuable than work experience when they go to apply for scholarships and internships. This generation has a tough road ahead, but they are rising up to the occasion. Learn more about how GenZ does college below.

How Does Paying for College Impact Students’ Mindsets?

The Growth Mindset theory states that how someone views their abilities impacts on how they think, feel and behave in future tasks. It is now arguably the most popular psychological theory in education. Growth Mindset has been associated with a range of benefits that include persistence, seeking better feedback, coping better with transitions, grit, and pro-social behaviours. These are often the behaviours associated with doing well at school. But does it translate into better grades?

Numerous studies conducted by many different researchers have found a strong relationship between students who have a growth mindset and the grades they achieved. Researchers Susana Claro, David Paunesku and Carol Dweck from Stamford University recently reported a large scale study of over 160,000 students) which found that growth mindset predicts grades across every socio-economic level in students in Chile.

Another study by Jason Snipes, who is the Director of Alliance Research for WestEd, found that in 121, 835 pupils in America, those with lower grades were more likely to have a fixed mindset. Both of these studies are fascinating and very important as they use a very large sample size (potentially adding weight to their findings). Likewise, a different study by David Paunesku, Gregory Walton.

Carissa Romero, Eric Smith, David Yeager and Carol Dweck from Stamford University and the University of Texas on 1,500 students found that combining a growth mindset and a sense of purpose intervention improved the likelihood of students completing Maths, English and Science courses and doing better along the way.

How to Enjoy a College Party

College parties are fun and adventure, and if you don't do anything stupid, it will also turn out to be memorable. It can be stressful to prepare for your first college party, but if you're sensible and don't go overboard trying to impress, things will work well. It is always great to dress up for parties, even in college. You don't need to spend a bomb on party apparel.

You can team a regular pair of jeans with a nice shirt. The most important thing is that you must not come across as someone trying too hard. College parties are places where you get to meet new people and make friendships that last a long time. Stay with your wingman, but do mingle around and try to chat with others at the party. Getting to know a few brothers will help you get invites for parties when entry becomes harder.
