Google just updated Maps with a bunch of useful tools, including an updated Covid overlay, takeout ordering features, and information of real-time crowdedness for public transport. In addition to that, a preview of the Google Assistant Driving Mode is launching in the U.S.

The Covid overlay for Google Maps was first introduced in September and Google has now added multiple features to it for both Android and iOS users. The overlay will provide information such as details about the number of cases detected in total in an area and links to COVID information provided by local authorities. The features would assist users in finding information about local rules and regulations during their travel.

Maps will also now display information regarding the crowdedness of public transport in real time, which would help you avoid a certain public transport route to maintain social distancing. The feature will roll out to both Android and iOS users around the world.

For information regarding takeout food, Google has updated Maps to show delivery prediction times, or when a meal is ready to be picked up from a restaurant. According to Google, this feature will be available to users in the U.S., Canada, Germany, Australia, Brazil and India for now.

The Google Assistant Driving Mode started rolling out to some Android users last month only, after Google announced the feature for the first time back in 2019. The mode offers a wide range of functionalities, including voice controls for features like phone calls and media playback from inside the Maps navigation screen, to help with easier accessibility while driving. The mode can be enabled via a pop-up in Maps or directly from the Google Assistant settings.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought a lot of health and safety concerns and Google has made sure to assist its users with getting around in a difficult time like this with as much ease as possible. Ever since the onset of the pandemic, Google has constantly updated Maps with about 250 new features, especially those related to the Covid health measures and precautions.
