Facebook has recently confirmed that it has updated its
desktop layout and some users have already started seeing it. The new layout
has a more compressed view and has tabs at the top of the screen.
Facebook made the announcement of the new layout back in May
2019 and it is surprising that it took it this long to make it available. But
Facebook has been giving access to the updated layout to some people gradually
and has been working on the feedback they have been giving for an improved
layout.
If Facebook has made the new layout accessible to you, you
will be notified in your newsfeed, where the site will ask you to explore the
new features.
At this point, you can not request access as it is only available
to a small number of users. According to Facebook, it will release the layout
on a large scale by April. This would be almost a year after Facebook made the announcement
for the update.
Facebook has not added any tools or functionalities with the
upcoming layout but it does have improved desktop navigation since it was
Facebook’s aim to make the desktop version similar to its mobile version while
making it more convenient for users to switch between the two.
This is something users can look forward to this year, it is expected
to be fully made available in the first half of 2020 but given the previous
delays, we can’t be sure.
