When was the internet invented? January 1st, 1983 is considered the Internet’s official birthday. This is when a new communications protocol called Transfer Control Protocol/Internetwork Protocol (TCP/IP) was established. Prior to this, the various computer networks around the world did not have a standardized way to communicate. In 1989, British scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web which was originally developed to fulfill a need for automated information-sharing between university and institution scientists around the world. It became open to the public by 1991. Since then, countless websites have risen and fallen through the ranks of popularity. This infographic from A2 Hosting traces the top ten most-visited websites each year since 1995. It shows the meteoric rise of Google, which went from 9th place in 2001 to 1st place in 2006 where it has remained ever since. How many of these websites do you remember from your early days on the web?
