Digital cities and the digital future

Internet of Things (IoT) have been a very important innovation for us. With automation being promoted everywhere, it is assumed that in a short while, everything will be automated just like those science fiction movies. We have automated, self-driving cars today, even our homes are automated. However, with such technology, we are now looking at deployment of IoT on a bigger scale, such as a whole city.

As cities are growing, the implementation of IoT and edge computing technologies can grow to be more useful in maintaining public order and a safe environment. Technology can also provide a way to improve effectiveness and efficiency of public and emergency services without major expenditure. By 2050 7.5 billion people are expected to reside in the cities – this number is the amount of people living in the world today.
Countries like China are keen on relying on technology in the coming years and have started to do so. They were one of the first countries to have adopted the CCTV technology in public places. Now with modern technology, they are using facial recognition as a form of crowd control.

However, there is also a concern for privacy and security with such implementations. There should be rules and regulations in place that will protect the identity of everyone while using facial recognition or any other form of surveillance. If done right, this can reduce the rate of crime and can save lives significantly.
