Every year a new flu vaccine is released to protect against the most widespread strains in the coming season. But all it takes is badly match flu vaccine or new strain appearing unexpectedly for the flu to turn into a deadly pandemic.
At the same time overprescription of antibiotics has led to the development of superbugs, antibiotic resistant bacteria that make it nearly impossible to treat infections. Coupled with a rapidly changing climate and increasing global travel, these disease can spread faster and farther than ever before.
The threats to humanity’s future aren’t only medical. As automation replaces human work and artificial intelligence is built into military weaponry, those science fiction tales aren’t looking so far fetched.
