Addiction vs Habit: Recognizing the Dangers
We all have good and bad habits. Often we indulge in these habits without giving it a second thought. That first cup of coffee in the morning is a prime example. Some folks simply can't function without that early morning java jolt. Like most habits, the first cup of coffee habit formed over time. The trigger can be the alarm clock. The routine becomes picking the brew and waiting for it to steep. The reward is that first soothing sip of robust coffee flavor. Your brain sighs and says, "Thank you. May I have another?"

This is not necessarily a bad habit (unless your doctor has recommended you cut back on the caffeine). The formation of bad habits follows the same pattern of "trigger to routine to reward" as a good habit does. It is the insidious nature of bad habits such as drug or alcohol addiction that can severely impact your brain and overall health. Ironically, the rewards for those bad habits are generated in the same areas of the brain. It is just that they are intensified to the max.

Recognizing how negative habits form and finding ways to break the cycle is the cornerstone of any type of recovery program. The following infographic breaks down the habit routine and shows the impact of letting bad habits take over your life.
