First know in history elevators were mainly designed to lift heavy weights for construction purposes. Later on elevators were implemented in royal palaces, because only very wealthy people could afford having such a technical marvel.
Elevators have long been a necessity, not a luxury. With mass building of sky scrapers in the 20th century it's hard to imagine what it would be like without them. There is even a term “elevator traffic”, which is quite handy in big popular hotels to get the maximum efficiency delivering guests to their rooms.
As much as some elevators can qualify as art or masterpiece of architecture, they along become a point of tourist attractions, some are just pure hell. And it's not the technical side of it, it's the people who accompany for those few minutes make it real hell. Sure you will recognize some of the described situations, and remember even more.
