Based on who's telling the story, propagators of today's cyber attacks are typically called as cyber criminals or hacktivists. It's easy to see the difference in connotations here; the first is a nefarious, mysterious, generally bad term, while the second gives a more human, heroic, or at least admirably rebellious light to the attacks. A large amount of hackers lurking on the web are really black hat criminals and nihilists, looking to steal your credit card data or cause a general interweb chaos, but since its early days hacking has always been a morally ambiguous activity. Many early hackers were curious software nerds — interested in how systems worked and excited by the challenge of gaining access to places they weren't supposed to — and many hackers still fall into this group today. But between the nefarious and the curious lies a growing gray area among the hacking community. Here is an infographic representing the hacktivism.
