When you are having a stroke, you stand a much better chance of survival if you get yourself to a hospital where they are trained to handle strokes better than anyone else. But when you are experiencing a life threatening emergency the first objective is always to get to any hospital, whichever is closest. If you live in an area with multiple hospitals from which to choose, knowing ahead of time which hospital is the best in which kind of emergency is key.

In the United States, your best chance of surviving a stroke comes from a comprehensive stroke center. These are hospitals that have done additional training on how to handle both active stroke patients as well as patients in recovery. There is often access to clinical trials and doctors and nurses are up to speed on the latest research.
