Why Canada Trumps America

Ever since the 2016 U.S. elections, millions of people around the world have been wondering, “Why can’t America be more like Canada?” On the day of the U.S. election results, Canada’s immigration website crashed due to demand. Suddenly, the prospect of emigrating into America’s northerly neighbour looked more attractive than ever.

With more natural wilderness, universal healthcare and Tim Hortons, it’s no wonder that people in their hordes are dreaming of going on holiday to Canada and never coming back… With Trump fully instated as America's 45th President, now seems the perfect time to ask ourselves: why does Canada trump America?

The History and Future of Wifi

Though the Internet we are familiar with today only came around during the 1990s, scientists and inventors all over the world have been theorizing about a system of digital, instantaneous connected service. Today, we predict a future of 20 billion IoT devices worldwide accounting for 2.6 times more than the number right now.

The theoretical ideas expressed by minds like Paul Otlet and Nikola Tesla made it possible for real-life applications be put to the test. From the 1970s to the 1980s, localized versions of wireless connections were utilized, like ALOHAnet and AT&T’s WaveLAN. By the 1990s, rapid development kicked in when the first large-scale wireless network was installed at Carnegie Mellon, and in 1999 the term Wi-Fi itself was trademarked by the Wi-Fi Alliance trade association.

There’s nothing new under the sun – even the eight billion WiFi-connected devices on Earth have a long story to tell. See this infographic for more on the history and future of WiFi.

A Timeline of When Elements Were Discovered and Who Discovered Them

Scientists have been on the search for the elements that make up our world for a very long time, since 9000 B.C.E. to be exact. Copper was the very first element to be discovered, followed by other popular metals gold, silver, iron, and lead. These elements have been popular materials that humans have used for many thousands of years.

This infographic explores the timeline of when all of the elements on the Periodic Table were discovered, where they were discovered, and who made the discovery. While there was a handful of elements discovered between 9000B.C.E. and 10000 C.E., we don’t see any other discoveries until the 1700s, after which a majority of the elements on the Periodic Table were discovered over the course of the following three centuries.

Interestingly the Periodic Table wasn’t created until 1869, after a majority of the elements were discovered. Dmitri Mendeleev created the table and left blank spots for the elements that future scientists would discover. Take a trip through time of how the periodic table came together, and celebrate the many people that discovered the elements along the way.

Universal Basic Income

In a 2018 poll, nearly half of Americans supported the idea of a Universal Basic Income program - where did this idea come from and what would it mean for our society today? The idea of a Universal Basic Income (UBI) has been around for centuries. Way back in 1516, Thomas More’s “Utopia” philosophizes on the benefits of a minimum income,

Thomas Paine wrote of a basic endowment for all adults over the age of 21 in 1796, and in 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. named guaranteed income as the final solution to poverty. Today, many call for UBI with the new rising threat of a new industrial revolution: automation. But in order to make this idea work some essential precepts must be met.

Aid should be given in real money rather than vouchers for goods or services and there should be no income level or employment requirement. Find out how countries and cities are testing UBI and how it would affect our society here.
