Uber's Food Delivery Segment 'Uber Eats' Flourishes in the Pandemic

The global pandemic has negatively affected many industries and Uber's rides have suffered the same fate. However, where Uber's typical ride services have suffered a loss due to the ongoing lockdown, their food delivery segment has been performing tremendously well.

The food delivery segment has doubled in terms of profit, whereas bookings for its ride-sharing service has fallen down by a massive 75 %. These figures were shared by Uber on Aug 6, 2020. Uber Eats, which is Uber's food delivery segment has no doubt flourished due to the ongoing lockdown.

Americans hesitate in using ridesharing service during COVID-19
As the USA gradually eases lockdown, rideshare provider Uber starts enhancing its COVID-19 safety protocols. However, a survey conducted by website Car Gurus claims that a majority of Americans are not planning to use ridesharing services and taxis as frequently as they did pre-coronavirus.

According to the survey, almost 40% of the Americans said that they want to change their habits and will use taxis/ridesharing less or even not at all – after the economy reopens. 45% also said the same about public transportation while 49% admitted that they would be using their own vehicle more in the coming months.

As per the report published by CNN business, Uber is planning to integrate facial recognition software in its existing ridesharing service. Through this app, the riders can make sure that the drivers are wearing a face mask or face covering before coming to pick them up.

The riders would also be required to cover their mouths and noses while using the ridesharing service.

During the lockdown, uber has asked its drivers to stay home as much as possible and shipping masks to those who provide the essential trips.

As of yet, Uber has not terminated any employee from their company but are reportedly mulling cuts. On the other hand, competitor Lyft has laid off nearly 1,000 employees amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

Uber is expected to publish its first-quarter earnings reports this week. It is expected that the ridership on the service is down by 70% in many cities from March. However, seems like the company will continue to face a shortfall, even after the pandemic subsides.
