Question Still remains Eight Years Later: #oscarsstillsowhite?

Michelle Yeoh was selected on Tuesday (24th January) for an Academy Award for her lead role in independent flick Everything Everywhere All at Once. This Malaysian Chinese actress is the very first women of Asian descent ever to be nominated in the Best Actress category (when discounting Natalie Portman who has U.S. and Israeli citizenship). Despite the fact that this milestone has received extensive coverage, there have also been voices condemning the lack of Black Best Actress nominees this year, showing that eight years after the hashtag #oscarssowhite, the argument about diversity at the Academy Awards is still ongoing.

Oscars 2020: Viewership Shrinks to a Record Level
Once upon a time, the annual Oscars was one of the most anticipated television events of the year with the audience all over the world waiting for their favorite movies to be honored. However, for a few years, viewership for the same show has declined significantly. In fact, this year the live show had an audience of around 23.6 million – a 20% decline from the 29.5 million viewership last year.

Experts claim that the major reason for the decline in viewership is a result of online streaming that has become prevalent over the years. Others also suggest that the event was held at an earlier date of 2020, which probably lessened the hype.

Another possible reason for the low viewership can be that the Academy Awards has been honoring low-budget movies for some time now. This year, South Korean movie Parasite won the award for Best Picture. However, a majority of the audience has not seen the movie and prefer the traditional blockbuster hits instead of low-budget creations.

Oscar Winners May Not Be a Big Hit with the Audience
The recently held Academy Awards honored the foreign language film, Parasite as the ‘Best Picture.’ Although foreign films have a category of their own since 1956, this is the first time a non-English film won the top prize in the prestigious ceremony.

Besides winning the ‘Best Picture’ trophy, the South Korean film by Bong Joon-Ho also bagged the top honors for Best Direction, Best Screenplay, and the Best International Feature Film. The movie also did pretty well in commercial terms and earned $165 million at the global box office.

However, this number is a far cry from the figures a traditional blockbuster is able to accumulate in today’s date. In fact, the highest-grossing film of 2020 earned approximately $2,798 million worldwide, while similar trends were seen in previous years as well.
