There are six root emotions that have several feelings behind them including, anger, fear, sadness, love, surprise and joy. Now if a person is joyful or sad, there are various possibilities of him to be in such a mood. One could feel joy because they are proud, cheerful, happy, euphoric, peaceful, etc. whereas, sadness could arise because the person is feeling unhappy, disappointed, lonely, shameful etc.
