The pandemic has led to increased domestic abuse across the entirety of the U.S. This comes as a consequence of many support systems being moved online, the isolation people experienced with their abusers, the financial and health struggles, and the process for reporting becoming harder within the pandemic.
Domestic violence is a huge issue. This infographic from the University of New England’s social work program (socialwork) gives a lot of insight on domestic violence. There are many varieties of domestic violence: physical violence, emotional and psychological intimidation, isolation, sexual assault, child harm, stalking, withholding money, destruction of personal property, verbal abuse, and animal cruelty to list a handful. Domestic violence doesn't only affect the victim, but also their children and society in general.
According to the CDC, domestic violence doesn't discriminate. Many people believe that domestic violence is mostly toward women but many men experience it as well. Many celebrities have been victims of domestic violence including Pamela Anderson, Halle Berry, Madonna, Tina Turner, Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Whitney Houston, and more. Even though more than 3 million American children witness domestic violence annually, only 25% of cases are actually reported. Children living in homes with domestic violence struggle to trust people, worry about the future, try to stay safe by siding with the abuser, struggle in school, feel guilty for the abuse, and experiment with substance abuse or self-harm. Globally, domestic violence costs more than $8 trillion a year.
