When people move to a new country or region, they usually have to learn a new language to navigate society. While multilingual people around the world prove they are up to the task, that doesn’t mean their native language diminishes in meaning or importance. Preply proves this truth with a set of graphics based on survey data. The team offered a survey that asked questions about the following topics:

• Mother tongue’s connection to identity 
• Emotions surrounding using or hearing their mother language
• Feelings among those who have more than one mother language
• Connection with others who speak the native language
• Language used for thinking or speaking to oneself
• Speaking the mother language with children and grandchildren

These topics formed a comprehensive view of how people in six countries are affected by the use of their mother language and how it impacts their lives and identities.
