Contributions of tech giants to Open Source

GAFAM or Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft along with being the massive tech companies are also some really active contributors to GitHub’s Open Source projects. The infographic below reveals the contributions that these tech giant companies have made to the Open Source projects in GitHub.

According to the chart, Google shows the largest share of contributions with more than a thousand new contributors year over year in 2020, making a total of 5,709 contributors. Well, it isn’t a huge surprise since Google has open-source embedded in its DNA. For example, its operating system in mobile phones is built on open-source code.

After the top open-source contributor companies, we could only see Red Hat paving its way to the top 8 contributor’s list. As shown in the infographic below, the company has a total of 3,127 contributors of which, 361 new sharers were added in 2020.
Open Source software has been a highly robust backbone for the software development industry since the 80s. However, the term was introduced in 1998. Since then, it has been an extremely valuable business for several companies such as MongoDB, Red Hat, and Elastic that resulted in the valuation of double-digit figures in billions.

On the other hand, for the tech giant companies such as Google, Apple and Amazon it has offered highly informative knowledge about the open-source bases and encouraged the employees to make contributions to the adjacent project in their leisure time.

Every year, Software Freedom Day is celebrated in September in order to enlighten the people by raising an awareness for the open source movement.
