Airbnb Bookings Rise Past Pre-Pandemic High in 2022

Airbnb bookings were seen to be cut by more than 40 percent due to the Covid 19 pandemic in 2020, but were seen to bounce back remarkably well in 2021 and 2022. Driven by the strong uptick in international travel in 2022, Airbnb received bookings more than double compared to 2020 and last year, as the number of nights and experiences booked through the platform surpassed its pre-pandemic extreme. Viewing the gross booking value, Airbnb's performance in 2022 was even more impressive as it exceeded 2019 levels by more than 66 percent, all thanks to average daily rates that were considerably higher last year than they were in 2019.

Following is the statement given by the company in its latest letter to shareholders:

"All regions saw significant growth in 2022 as guests increasingly crossed borders and returned to cities on Airbnb".

The year 2022 for Airbnb ended with 6.6 million global active listings, which is up 900,000 listings from the beginning of the year.

Even before the rebound of global tourism in 2022, Airbnb had found its way to take benefit of the unique conditions created by the pandemic.

The company said at the beginning of 2022,

“We are undergoing the biggest change to travel since the advent of commercial flying,”

“Remote work has untethered many people from the need to be in an office every day, resulting in millions of people who can live anywhere.”

As a result of this newly added freedom, one in five nights booked on the platform in Q4 2021 were for stays of a month or longer and almost 175,000 guests booked a stay for three months or longer in 2021.
