There have been horrific stories of child abuse in the news and it feels like it just gets worse every year. The Turpin family whose story shook America in 2018 after the parents were found abusing 13 of their children and keeping them starved and chained to their beds is just one shocking example. As most abusers they moved around the US a lot to try and cover their tracks. When they were discovered, they were living in California. On this list of the US states with the highest child abuse rates California ranks 31st with 60,317 cases in their population of 8,791,234 of under 18's. This gives them a rate of 686.1. The highest rate on the list is found in Maine. Out of 248,168 people under 18 there were 4,726 reported cases giving them a rate of 1,904.4 out of 100,000 people under 18. The lowest rate of child abuse cases were reported in the state of Pennsylvania. 4,582 cases out of 2,620,757 people under 18, giving them a rate of 174.8.
