TikTok makes personalized ads mandatory

If you are on social media, you might have seen targeted ads on different social media platforms, including TikTok. However, the giant video-sharing app currently allows its users to opt-out of personalized ads, but according to the company’s plans, you might not have a choice of opting out of them anymore soon. TikTok has announced making targeted advertisement mandatory, and the update will be rolled out on April 15th.

As per TikTok’s notice, you will still be able to opt-out of personalized ads that are served based on the data extracted from your activity on “other partners,” including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. or various website but, the option to stop engaging with the targeted ads based on the data pulled from the activities within the app itself.
However, the company says that the change won’t affect the privacy of its users at all. The change is expected to be somewhat related to Apple’s upcoming update with the release of iOS 14.5, where the app developers will be required to request permission from the users to collect their data for personalized advertisement.

According to Apple’s policy, any app that doesn’t get permission will have to face the consequences, i.e., suspension or complete removal from the App Store. Hence, this new update from TikTok to make the personalized ads mandatory will make the company to still show personalized ads to some extent as the majority of the people are expected to disagree from allowing the developers to track their data.
