Microsoft has made a name for itself in the gaming industry
now. With its exclusive AAA games and a gaming console Xbox, it has charted its
course in the gaming world. Recently, Microsoft has acquired ZeniMax Media, a
video game holding company with a more notable publisher, Bethesda Softworks.
The acquisition of ZeniMax Media is reported to be of $7.5
billion, which is the second largest acquisition in video game industry’s
history. Microsoft is clearly making a statement that it is serious about the
future of gaming platforms. The deal hasn’t completed just yet, but it is just
a matter of time when it is finished. ZeniMax Media’s largest money-maker,
Bethesda Softworks has produced a number of superhit games such as, Elder
Scrolls, Fallout and Doom.
The Chinese company, Tencent, and its acquisition of
Supercell remains the largest buyout in the gaming industry. Supercell is a
mobile gaming company with its most notable money-making game being Clash of
Clans. Supercell already made billions of dollars before the buyout through its
mobile games and apps. Tencent acquired Supercell in 2016 for $8.6 billion. There
have been a few more notable acquisitions in the gaming industry such as
Facebook purchase of Oculus VR, Activision’s purchase of developer King and
Microsoft’s acquisition of Mojang, the makers of Minecraft.
With the release of new generation of consoles on the horizon,
this acquisition may impact the way Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S sales are
made. However, the experts still predict that Sony’s PlayStation 5 will
outnumber Xbox Series in sales. Both gaming console heavyweights will kick off
a new generation for the gaming world. Both consoles are set to release in
November this year.
