Active Shooters in the United States- Key Facts & Statistics 2018

Active shooter incidents have become an increasingly prevalent problem, especially in the U.S., over the past decade. These types of incidents are increasing- in an FBI study of active shooter incidents from 2000-2018, we see that 2017 was the worst year on record, with 2018 being a close second. During the first seven years included in the FBI study, an average of 6.4 active shooter incidents occurred annually. In the last seven years of the study, that average increased to 16.4 incidents annually.

Schools and workplaces are especially at risk- almost 60% of all mass shootings happen at places of work. Schools are hardly safer- since Columbine (1999), there have been 236 school shootings and 296 lives lost in American K-12 schools and higher education institutions. 2018 is the second worst year on record for active shooter incidents- 27 Active Shooter incidents occurred in 16 states, resulting in 213 casualties (excluding the shooters).

85 people lost their lives, with another 128 wounded Given the range of locations that active shooter events take place at, effectively responding to these incidents to reduce harm and save lives is a task that falls not just to the police, but to EMS personnel, security and public safety officials, schools, office managers, and members of the public.
